Baby with a cut that I can't get to heal

My LO is 12 months old.  She has sensitive and dry skin.  I keep her well lotioned and she does fine.  However her thumbs and fingers have gotten very dry and the soft part of her thumb her skin has cracked.  It looks very painful.  It doesn't seem to bother her, but it's very rough and looks painful and I don't want to get an infection in it.  I've tried to keep extra lotion on it and aquaphor at night, but it seems to be getting worse if anything.  She does not suck her thumbs, she chews on her other fingers occassionally as she is teething.  At her age I don't want to use a band-aid because I am afraid of the choking hazard.  Does anyone have a good idea on how to put something on it that will stay on and is not an ingestion hazard?

The things I've read about liquid bandage are not good, especially if she were to suck on it, and i'm afraid with her sensitive skin that it would also cause problems that way.

Also posted on the 12-24 month board.

  • Maybe try loading her up with lotion and putting gloves on her hands to keep the mouisture in while she is sleeping?

  • i was just introduced to bio-oil & LOVE IT but it's not cheap! i havent used it on ds, we find aquafor works well on him (he's got eczema), maybe you can call your ped to see if bio-oil is safe for her. it's a great moisturizer like aquafor but not as heavy & thick.

  • The only thing I can think of is do you leave a humidifier on while LO is sleeping? The moisture in the air might help. That's all I've got though. Good luck - that doesn't sound so good.

  •  I would call my pedi's office and ask...
