Antibiotics, I hate you...

So DD is on antibiotics for the first time. I know from having been on them myself that they do a real number on your digestive system. Despite trying to give her probiotics (which admittedly, she doesn't like the taste of and won't drink much of), her stomach is a mess. She barely ate yesterday, then when she finally did eat, it went right through her.

Same thing today. Now she's curled up on the sofa with zero energy, even though the cold the antibiotics were prescribed for (yes, a COLD, *shakes fist at doctor*) is mostly better.

And I am at my wits' end after taking care of a sick child for a week straight. If I can't send her to school tomorrow, I very well might spend the day crying. Really. I am that exhausted.

So now for the question part. I know you're supposed to do the full cycle of antibiotics, but what if you think there was never any bacteria to treat to begin with?

How long/how many doses has she taken? What were her symptoms? Did she ever have a fever over 101? Ear problems?

She took the first dose of antibiotics Thursday night. So, she just took her 6th dose this morning (administering it 2x/day- supposed to do so for 6 days).

She had a fever hovering between 100-102 for a few days last week, then it spiked to 105 Thursday night, which is when I took her to the doctor.

He checked her ears and they were okay. He sent her for a lung xray and that was okay, too. She does not have pneumonia.

I really question this doctor's prescription of both the antibiotics and the lung xray. I am hesitant to call him again and am trying to get reco's for another pedi from the few people I know in Paris.

  • I wouldn't stop but it is awesome she went this long without them. Once DD started Pre-school we had non stop ear infections from labor day to memorial day. We were still breastfeeding though which may have eased the digestive issues.

  • Thanks for weighing in, Fred! I know I should ask an actual medical expert, but when I picked up the phone to dial our pedi in the US, I realized I don't have enough credits on my cell to dial international long distance and the phone credit place is closed until tomorrow.

  • I often question my pedi before starting antibiotics and decide to start late or not give them at all, but it is my understanding once you start, never stop (until the course is finished) because that's how "superbugs" are created.

Sorry your LO is so sick.  We are all sick here too =(

Fortunate to be a SAHM to my 3 musketeers (5/2006, 5/2010 & 12/2011). Soy & dairy free for the 3rd and final time. Lilypie Kids Birthday tickers Lilypie Second Birthday tickers Lilypie First Birthday tickers imageimage
  • I would finish the dose, but in the meantime, have you put her on a probiotic?  Our LO has had 6 antibiotics in the past 7 months for ear infections :(  (tubes next week!) and our pedi suggested Florastor for Kids - behind the pharmacy counter, but OTC and mega servings of yogurt.  Both seem to really help.  Hope she feels better soon!

edit: apparently I can't read! The Florestor actually tastes okay and is a powder you can mix with other foods (yogurt, ice cream, applesauce, etc.) Maybe she'd take it.

That is good to know about superbugs.

I am hesitant to use antibiotics unless they are really needed. It was one of the questions we asked our Pedi when we were deciding who to go to. (If they prescribe antibiotics frequently and/or are concerned about their overuse)

  • Sorry about your DD Anna, I have a sick little one here too. No energy, on and off fever (never over 102 though so we haven't been to the doctor). About the phone credit, can you buy credit online? I have had systems where I couldn't but after I got a Swedish debit card I am able to. I also have 'emergency' sim cards that always work but cost a fortune to use. Hope she feels better soon.

Hmmm, not sure, but I still don't have a French bank account. I will poke around online and see what I find out.

  • Will she eat yogurt?  That will serve the same purpose as the probiotics.

  • ditto the Florastor for Kids probiotic powder, I mix it in her yogurt or applesauce and she has no idea it's there.  Yogurt itself is probably just as well most of the time.  and i'm so sorry she's sick (and you're so tired!).  hope you're all better soon.  we are on antibiotics here too but this is like our millionth dose at 3 yrs old, ugh, way too much.
