Tylenol Help Please!!

Ok I'm so confused!! Went to the pdei today for LOs 6 month shot...she said to start giving him Infant Tylenol instead of Childrens Tylenol. I can't find infant Tylenol anywhere! I've been using childrens Tylenol and I was under the impression that it was totally fine. When I went in for his two month shots the nurse told me childrens tylenol was ok to use and now 4 months later the pedi is telling me not to use it but to use infant tylenol? Ugh I'm so confused! What do you use? Do you use childrens Tylenol that says its for 2 years or older? That's what I've been using and haven't been able to find any for younger than 2 years old. Thanks for any advice...FTM here if you can't tell:)

We use Infant's Tylenol and always have. They have it at Target I know for a fact. They have both Children's and Infants. I'm really surprised that you can't find any TBH, I thought it was everywhere.

Our pedi told us specifically to never use anything children's until he's 2. Use off brand Tylenol - Target and Meijer are usually in stock!!

I've looked at Target and they don't have it! Just childrens...I don't know what to do! Does anyone know how bad it is that I've given childrens this whole time? I'm freaking out a little. I just really though it was ok since the pedis nurse said it was fine. maybe I can order it online? I seriously can't find it anywhere

we were using infant until DS had a 105 fever for like 5 days and took him to the ER and they looked at us like we were morons because it goes by weight. DS is 21lbs so the infant tylenol was doing nothing for him. As soon as we switched it was like the skies opened up!

Check out Little Fevers for infant they should have it at a drug store or babies r us

They are technically the same thing - the infant's tylenol is just more concentrated which is why you give a smaller dose. According to my pedi, Tylenol no longer makes (or is phasing out) their infant's tylenol due to people overdosing. It is perfectly ok to give children's tylenol after a certain weight (I don't know it off the top of my head) and your pedi should have a handout that tells proper dosing for your child's weight. I am pretty sure the weight is 23 lbs for children's Tylenol/Advil/etc. OP, if you're really concerned call the pedi and ask but I'm sure your LO will be fine. Just keep trying Target/WalMart/drugstores until you find the infant stuff. I guarantee someone has it if you keep looking.

Thank you all so much for the advice! I'll continue to look for infant tylenol but if I can't find it I may just pick up Little Fevers...I've definitely seen that several places. Thanks again:)

Oh I really wouldnt worry but I so understand being concerned having been doing it for so long. Like all the other moms have said its the concentration. Your LO isnt harmed I garentee it! We use Little Fevers and it has helped with her teething. We give LO about 1ml and a half with that stuff. She weighs 18lbs.

My ped said to get rid of any infant Tylenol we have in the house.

I believe they are phasing out infant Tylenol and the dropper dosers. They will only have syringes now because the droppers are not precise enough and parents were incorrectly dosing with two different formulas/dropper vs syringe.

BTW, I am pretty sure there is only children's ibuprofen, and it is approved for over 6 months. I believe they are also making ibuprofen/Advil and acetaminophen/Tylenol have the same dose for the same weight, going forward so there is no longer confusion.

Infants "tylenol" is being phased out, so don't worry if you can not find it. That is just the name brand. Get some infant acetaminophen. That is the active ingredient in tylenol.

Even Target no longer carries their own brand of infant acetaminophen. Everything is children's and your pedi should be more aware of this than anyone. I still use Infant since I still have a bottle, but our pediatrician makes sure we know the correct dosage of children's at every appt. Please call your pediatrician. If they are not aware of the changes, I would seriously find a new pediatrician.

They no longer make infant tylenol. We have been giving LO childrens tylenol since his 2 month shots. It says check with doc if under 2 years because the dose is based on weight. This is the info on the chart our doc gave us:

160mg/5mL (The old infant tylenol was 80mg/0.8mL so this make sure the bottle says 160/5 if using this chart)

weight (lbs.) Age (mos) Dose (mL)

6-11 lbs 0-3 mos 1.25mL

12-17 lbs 4-11 mos 2.5 mL

18-23lbs 12-23 mos 3.75 mL

24-35lbs 24-36 mos 5 mL

So even though our DS is 8 months, he would get 3.75mL because when you base it on weight, he is 21 lbs.

I am actually kind of shocked that your pedi would tell you not to use childrens. I think I would question this next time.

I am an ER nurse and we give out Children's Tylenol to infants like candy.We give our patient's their first dose from a regular sized bottle of Children's Tylenol and then the parents get the bottle to take home with them. Some companies are starting to phase out the infant Tylenol. The standard dosage for Tylenol is 10-15mg per kilogram (2.2lbs)- divide your LO's weight in lbs by 2.2 and then times by 10 and that is the mg strength that you should be using. FWIW, I still use infant Tylenol on both my LO's because the volume of medicine is alot more with the children's and it makes them gag. The volume is alot less with the infant concentrated so its easier for them to take.

Yes, all the old concentration Tylenol is off the shelves. Now it's the 160/5 that pp posted above. I'm surprised your Pedi is not up to speed on this as its been a big recall by JNJ and generic manufacturers.

Wow! I'm wondering if maybe my pedi got confused and meant to say to just use childrens and not infants? Either was she did a thorough job on confusing me! More than anything I thought it was so weird since I had gotten the ok at his 2 month appointment...I mean I even brought a bottle in and showed it to the nurse and she said to absolutely use childrens. LO weighs almost 21 pounds and so she went over the new dosage with me yesterday which is 3.75 ml. I'm starting to think now she just got the two confused and really meant to tell me to use childrens...

Well see that is why infant vs children's is no more and it's important to know the concentration. This confusion led to potentially lots of overdoses, which with Tylenol can be very serious. I would call back and verify it's for the 160/5 concentration. I hate that your pedis office keeps referring to children's versus infants.

Doesn't the box for childrens tylenol say not to use before 2 years?! We've always used the infant stuff, off brand right now.

I can only get off brand infant tylenol (I usually buy Target brand). I have heard the same as PP that they are fazing out the infant tylenol. They changed the concentration levels over the summer. We used to have to give much less because it was concentrated because it's difficult to get a baby to take medicine and they'll often spit it out. I guess that was causing some to become over medicated so, it's now less concentrated but you give more.

There is such thing as infants ibuprofen (for babies 6 months and older). It goes up to 23 or 24 lbs. We give that to DS and also the Little Fevers brand of infant acetaminophen.
