We're in a pickle

C has been sick the past two days, and I'm thinking that even if his fever is down tomorrow morning, he should stay away from DC another day because he's been so listless, fussy, coughing a lot, not eating and just wants to be held.  I have a work presentation in the morning, and DH has a dental procedure appointment which he's had scheduled for over a month.  So who stays home with C?

Also, I hate that I feel pressure to prioritize work over my sick kid.

  • I don't know how to decide, but I'll tell you this - days like that really make me wish we had local family.  Do you have that option?  Otherwise I would probably bite the last minute cancellation fee at the dentist if the work presentation was non-negotiable.

  • I think work presentation (assuming you are the one presenting) trumps dentist, unless it's a major problem like getting a tooth replaced. Poor C, I hope he feels better soon!

ETA: What time are you having the conflict of obligations? H has daycare tomorrow so I might be able to help you out for a few hours if we're talking after 9:15ish.... (and you think C would be ok with a relative stranger)

DH's aunt that might be available lives in Bmore.  I feel bad, but I think that DH is going to have to reschedule his appointment.  He had already taken the day off for it, so he doesn't have any work conflicts.

This is a major downside to living away from siblings/parents.

  • Ugh...no easy decision. I always say this is the only time I really dislike being a working mom - it works well for us, until the whole sick days come in to play. There is just so much guilt from all sides that it kills me. We're lucky in that we do have local family, but I'd probably go with your DH rescheduling his appointment.

  • I hate situations like this! We also don't have local family, and it can be tough to not have any backup support.

You've probably already decided what to do, but I thought I'd give my 2 cents anyway. If his fever is down and he otherwise meets the "criteria" for being ok for daycare, I would probably ask DH to drop him off at daycare just for long enough for him to go to his dental appointment. This is assuming it's a fairly short appointment and won't take more than a couple of hours; if it's an all-day ordeal, then that may not work. Even if C isn't feeling 100%, he'll probably be ok for a couple of hours.

  • DH cancelled his appointment, and rescheduled it (only next available appt isnt until mid March).  C's fever was still up around 104 last night (with ibuprophen & tylenol) and he slept horribly, so DH is home with him.  Having a sick kid is the worst, and having to leave him to tend to work responsibilities wracks me with such guilt!

  • I think J and C have the same thing.... she's been coughing with a fever since Tuesday evening.  :(

I'm not sure what we're going to do tomorrow, either - but, I think she might be OK to go.  Her fever is down as of this morning, and she's acting pretty normal - but we'll see if it spikes up this afternoon.

That sucks about L's appt.  If I were staying home tomorrow, I'd offer to watch C - but... I think it will be G, since I have work stuff that would be a PITA to cancel.

At least we have the long weekend to let them rest, and to get them back to normal!!!!

  • It wouldn't work in this case, but I would look into back up care for situations where he doesn't have a fever.  Many of the nanny agencies (White House nannies comes to mind) offer this type of service even for mildly sick kids.  We used one once for DD when our nanny took off and I really liked the person they sent.  My work actually offers this as a benefit!
