For all who are following my situation...

I got a job and yesterday was my first day! It wasn't necessarily what I saw myself doing ( I have a degree in Criminal Justice and it's secretarial w/ possibility of moving up to admin work for a non-profit) but it's something. DH has an interview next week that he is getting excited about (dream job for him) but he is nervous. It's been REALLY hard to leave LO and yesterday I worked a bit later than I was supposed to so I didn't get home until about 15 minutes before we had to start LO's bedtime routine... so no time with him. He's been STTN until last night where he got up twice (we think it's because he took a 4 hour nap yesterday). But now.. if DH gets this job we have to look at daycare. Every one that I have seen is $300-350 a week! I know this may seem like nothing to some of you since I have read about some women who pay 500 a week but OMG that's going to be like most of my paycheck after taxes. We are going to check with family first to see if anyone could help watch him (we would still pay them but probably like half). How do you ladies do it? It's certainly not helping the fact that I would like to stay home with him anyways so this gives me an excuse to quit even though I just started LOL

Re: For all who are following my situation...

  • 300 a week is outrageous! I know people here who pay $900/month and that is pretty much the top for daycares in our area. I found a really great lady who watches LO at her house. There is one other little boy there who is 4.. and the woman's daughter keeps a 9 month old and has her own 2 year old next door so they often watch the kids together. I only pay her $140/week and she's giving almost 1-on-1 care to my LO. I think churches can be cheaper too (at least here they are).

I know some people who have had problems with family members being their childcare provider so even though it's cheaper, just consider the possible outcomes!

  • Congrats on the new job! Child care is expensive, but I do think it varies depending on the situation and the region. In our area, homes that provide child care for 3-4 children tend to be the cheapest at $125-150 a week. (Perhaps you can find one by asking moms in your neighborhood/work). The daycare centers here range from about $150-250 per week.  We are planning to have a woman come to our home, so it will be $350 a week.  It is pretty pricey, but DH and I really want one person here with LO. My boss agreed to let me work from home 2 days a week, so that makes it easier to have LO here to nurse, but still have help while I do my work. Plus, the woman is helping with light housework, which is nice.

I know other areas of the country can be more expensive, so I would encourage you to ask around and do some research first. If a family member can help, that's great! Also, you may be receiving other benefits from working, such as health insurance. If not, and child care is eating up most of your salary, then you might consider looking for other opportunities that match your needs and interests.  Good luck mama!

  • In the DC area, the going rate is $8-15/hr for sitters for one child.  Some of my friends do a nanny share.  One nanny with two babies roughly the same age and the babies are at one of the families homes during the day.  It should bring the price down plus the babies aren't exposed to as many germs and they have a playmate.  Good luck!

  • Paying for daycare is super hard.  Our daycare bill is currently double our mortgage.  Ugh.  In home is generally cheaper than centers, so you might look into that instead.  Good luck!

  • Congrats on the new job!  I work for a non-profit so I understand your pain of getting paid pennies, but it's worth it in the end.  Also, if it's a large non-profit then you'll definitely be able to move up quickly.  Just give it all you've got it and show them your talent.

As for daycare, I live in DC and $300 per week is the lower end of what I've found.  Luckily, my FI is in the Air Force and so I've found an Officer's wife who is willing to watch LO for me for $175 per week.  She loves her daycare provider and it really works for our situation.  At 1 year old I'm going to place her into a daycare center so she gets more interaction with kids her own age, but for now I just want her to feel she's being taken care of.

  • Our in home daycare (LO plus 3 other kids) is $35/day so $175 a week. Centers are definitely more pricey so check out the home ones too.
