Received news that we have an abnormal range within our quad screen. Which was the AFP test. Have to go see a specialist. Makes me super nervous. Anyone else experienced this?
Yes. Last pregnancy through a quad screen at age 33. Abnormal range for Down Syndrome at 1/235. Had amnio and the baby was perfectly fine. This time had NT scan and bloodwork. Again abnormal range for Down Syndrome at age 35, 1/151. Having amnio again in three weeks. Just remember if or until you have further testing, it's only a risk, not a diagnosis. Once you meet with the genetic specialist, you should feel more informed of your options and concerns.
Thank you for sharing that with me. It is comforting to know that others have gone through this. I will love my baby no matter what, but it is just scary to think that the lil thing could be faced with any amount of suffering...
Yes I had the same thing. The genetic counselor actually told me that the quad screen is an older test and is not usually as a good as the NT scan (mine had come back normal). I ended up doing the new blood test that just came out: the MaterniT21. It tests specially for downs syndrome, though it may also detect some other trisomies. Fortunately mine did come back negative. Check to see if they have it in your state yet.

Try and remain as positive as you can. Yes, I went through this last year... Depending on your situation you may have to do an amnio. You can opt not to, of course. But in my opinion, after going this far, I'd go for the 99%+ results so that you can plan accordingly. It's best to be prepared than surprised at the birth. I couldn't ever imagine finding out at the birth that my child has an anomaly. Thoughts and prayers because I know what it's like to be in your shoes.
Two weeks ago, my AFP was high indicating Spina Bifida or other open neural tube disorders. My ratio was 1:39 which freaked me out horribly condiering the fact that Spina Bifida is somewhat genetic and my mother had it. A week ago, I had a high level US and everything was perfectly normal... my baby boy was moving, kicking, and wiggling his toes for us and there was NO sign of any problems. It is a scary time, I stressed soooo badly until I had proof. Typically, the percentages are in your favor due to the 90% false positive rate that this test incurs. They take your age plus your protiens and do a mathematic caluclation.... nothing else. It is simply an indicator, not a positive test. AFP's can be high or low for no real reason - like mine. The best advice that I got was to not waste your week away worrying. It helped me...hopefully it helps you. Good luck.
