Babies: 0 - 3 Months

straining, grunting and going red but no poo?

My 3 week old is formula fed as I couldn't breast feed for health reasons. All night and morning he has been straining and grunting going bright red and his stomach goes hard when he is pushing, but no poo?? Is he constipated should I call a doctor or someone? He last pooed yesterday at 8ish but it was very watery? Is this normal? Has anyone else had this as its horrible watching him laying there straining for ages and no poo!

Re: straining, grunting and going red but no poo?

  • We BF but did supplement A LOT with formula for a couple of weeks and DD had poop problems. My Pedi told us that a FF baby isn't considered constipated unless s/he has gone 6-10 days without a BM. If BFing it's 4-5 days. I know that formula slows a baby's digestive system down which is what cause them to get stopped up. Try doing "bicycle" with his little legs and then holding his feet and with his knees bent, push his legs up into his tummy (if that makes sense) also went he shows like he is trying to push it out, sit him up so it is easier for him to push it out (think about it, it'd be hard for you to have a BM while laying down right?). You can also try giving him an ounce of warm water, I would wait to do this one though for another day or so. Be prepared because he won't be able to absorb the pure water quick enough so he will have a poop explosion! If he doesn't have a BM by tomorrow am, call your Pedi... they always know best! Hope your little man feels better soon :)

  • We FF our girls and for the first 8 weeks or so they would do this.  They still do it every now and then.  Our Pedi told us that if they are constipated that you will see small hard pebble like poos coming out.  If your lo is really uncomfortable, our Pedi told us we could give an ounce of prune juice or a half a glycerin suppository.  The prune juice made our girls really fussy but the suppository helped a lot.  It has gotten better as they have gotten older.  Now they go every other day or so.  GL!

Ditto this. We BF and FF equally and my LO does the same grunting, straining you are talking about. He pretty much has been pooping every other day or so but strains throughout the day. I also have heard that their digestive systems are still eveloping and this could be the cause.

FWIW, we switched to Similac Sensitive and it made it worse.

  • My DS has this exact problem.  It is so hard to see him scream and I can't help him.  A fellow bumpie (and my cousin did this with her DD also) suggested that I use a q-tip with vaseline on it and stick it in his rear.  I know this sounds crazy and I had a hard time acutally going through with this, but it got things moving in there and he had a BM literally like 15 minutes later.  GL!

  • Babies that young are still figuring out how their body works and their digestive system is still developing. Don't panic yet Wink My DS is FF and BF and we discovered he is just a gassy kid! Call your pedi if he goes more than a few days. Usually they go right after you call, go figure!
