how long did you work?

I'm a teacher, and getting pretty exhausted working. I try to sit when I can, but it's just not possible sometimes. However, luckily, I haven't had any complications so far (other than painful carpal tunnel syndrome and some mild swelling and of course my back hurting). So I don't know what my doctor will put in his note for me to stop working?

I'm planning to work about 3 more weeks, so I'll be 31/32 weeks when I stop.

when did you stop and why?

Re: how long did you work?

  • my Ob told me to expect to stop working between 24-28 weeks even if all was going perfectly- he didn't want me to over-do it and have PTL.   My job has me on my feet much of the day (similar to teaching, which i have done and know how rough it can be).

I stopped at 27 weeks b/c it just worked out well with timing of our quarter.  I could have gone to 28 weeks- but about then I hit a wall and was SO glad I stopped.

I made it to 38w1d without any signs of labor and I know maybe it was luck- but I credit it to taking it really easy those las 11 weeks and not working, etc.

I'd ask to be taken out ASAP if i was you... your class will be fine - you need to worry about your babies now.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • I'm impressed you're still working :) I work a desk- job and hit a major wall at about 28 weeks. I was pulled from work and put on bed rest at 30 weeks due to PTL. Listen to your body- there are no awards for working beyond your comfort level :)

  • I have a desk job, so it's not physically demanding like teaching.  I do have a pretty grueling commute, which I stopped doing at 24 weeks.

I worked from home until 32 weeks where I couldn't even sit comfortably anymore.  I then spent another 5 weeks laying on the couch (and going to lots of doctor's appointments) before my water broke at 37w3d.

  • I'm still working but just this week I had to start working from home due to mild contractions and a shortening (but still good length) cervix.

My husband is currently unemployed so we really can't afford for me to stop working all together or even go part-time.

  • I worked at a desk job until the day before I delivered for a false alarm IUGR at 34.5w. I felt great and active, so barring anything medical, I planned to work until the end.

  • Still tickin' at almost 28 weeks. 40 hours a week, desk job.

I was working almost 60 a week from November - end of January, so this feels like vacation :)

Once April rolls around, I am going to see about going down to 36 or 32 hours because I will have weekly appointments that will cause me to miss 1/2 a day the way it is. It will be way easier to just take that day off completely.

  • I stopped at 23w but I have some health issues (my left lung and heart don't function as well as they should thanks to damage from radiation and chemo from over 8 years ago). I took a personal leave, it wasn't something I "was told to do". I did it for me. I'm 33w and have had a few things pop up (cholestasis, GD, now high BP, and babies that are SGA). I just basically take it easy, no bed rest but kind of do a modified bed rest and luckily have kept these two cooking!! Edited to add: my job is 90% on my feet also so I'm glad I came out!!

  • I worked a desk job until the day before my water broke at 37 weeks. I have a walk/train commute which I did every day (just walked slowly at the end) except for days that I had doctor's appointments, and on those days I worked from home. But otherwise I was lucky and felt great. I'd hoped to work one more week until my scheduled c-section at 38 weeks, but didn't last quite that long.

  • I was already a SAHM but at 28w my OB said if I worked he wanted me to stop because I was contracting pretty frequently.  At 32w4d I was admitted to L&D for PTL.
  • I am a Kindergarten teacher and I started working 1/2 time 4 days a week, just in the afternoons, last week at 30 weeks. I am going to try to keep working in the afternoons until March? We'll see if that really happens. I think I probably have one more week in me and that'll be it. My doctor is supportive of whatever I am okay with and some days are better than others. Yesterday (valentine's day) was rough but we'll see how today goes! I need to save as many sick days as I can so that I can stay home until the end of the year and still get paid! However, I also need to be sensitive to what my body and babies need too. Luckily, I will only have to work 3 half days next week so that should fly by!

  • I'm a technologist in a stem cell lab and I worked until I was exactly 32 wks.

My pregnancy was going well and I was able to take it easy as I got further along. I guess it all depends on your individual situation... How you feel and what your doctor recommmends. One thing I would definitely say is don't push it.

  • I am also a teacher, although part-time (8am to 1pm).  My day was made more difficult by traveling between buildings every day.  But I worked almost until I delivered- my last day was at 36 weeks, 3 days.  I then took 2 days off before my scheduled c-section, at 37 w, 1 day.  I had no complications, and laid around every afternoon and quit doing any errands/ cleaning/ shopping etc early on.

  • I work a desk job.  I worked until the morning of my 37w0d, and then delivered (via scheduled c-section) at 3 that afternoon.  I did work from home more often there near the end.
  • I worked a full-time desk job until 37w4d, the day before I delivered by emergency C thanks to sudden pre-E. I had a half-hour commute each way and 115 steps from my desk to the bathroom. I'm not going to lie, there were days I would have much rather been home on the couch, but I'm lucky my pregnancy was healthy enough to allow me to continue working.

I went to part-time hours at 28 weeks but was put on bedrest at 33 weeks. Had the boys at 36 & 5.

  • I teach 3rd grade and I worked until I was 36 weeks.  My OB said I could work as long as I felt comfortable or until any complications arose.  I had planned to work til 37 weeks, but at 36 weeks the swelling in my legs became very painful and I couldn't really stand, walk, etc.  Other than that I didn't mind working... yes I was tired, but I wanted to save my days for after the babies were born.
  • My OB put me on modified bedrest at 24 weeks preventatively....so I work from around 7:30am-1pm, then I go home and work from bed.  I try to stay off my feet the rest of the day as much as possible, but I have a toddler that comes home from day care around 5:30...DH does A LOT, but I still end up getting up for this and that.  I've quit running errands and taking DD anywhere myself, though.

  • i worked 12 hour night shifts as a nurse until about 31 weeks then went on light duty until i was admitted to the hospital for ptl at 33 weeks.  boys were born 4 days later.

  • I work as a in-home/school therapist. I was in and out of homes/schools/car constantly. I worked on the day I had my babies and actually think that is why I had such an easy delivery. I was 36 weeks 3 days. I worked full time and have two older children (5 and 3) at the time.  I didn't need to be in my feet all the time or else I would have died! Good luck!!
  • I'm stopping at 28 weeks, so I only have another few weeks to go (cannot wait, to be honest). It's a desk job, and I don't have any complications thus far...so my going out early is more of a precaution. So far, I don't have any complications, and I'd like to keep it that way. Plus, at 25 weeks, I'm already to the point of having a hard time walking (lovely SPD!)...so, I can't imagine that getting any better as they get bigger!
  • I worked until the day before my scheduled c/s which was 36w3d due to cholestasis. I work a corporate desk job and was still working full time the day before. I have about a 30-40 minute commute and days I had doctor appointments I worked from home, which was heaven to be able to take a nap. The last month at work I did start to slow down, and made sure I kept my feet up whenever possible to reduce the swelling in my feet. Listen to your body, it will tell you when you need to slow down. GL!

  • Im a teacher and I got put on bedrest at 28 weeks.  Everything was going great till one day I went to my OB and I was having contractions I couldnt feel and effaced 75%.  By 30 weeks, I dont think I could have done it anymore if I wasnt already on bedrest.

  • My OB pulls all his MoM's out of work at 28 weeks regardless of occupation. He used to tell me "you're the size of a full-term singleton mother, so you need to rest up and take it easy". I'm an RN and work 12 hour shifts in ICU. I didn't argue with the man.
