NBR: Laser hair removal?

I'd really like to get laser hair removal on my bikini line and under arms, but beyond hearing ads, I don't have much info about what to look for in a place and what to expect. I've tried calling but I can't really get many details without having consultations, and I don't have time for several consultations just to figure out if I can afford it, lol.

so, if you had laser hair removal:

  • where did you go/what did you get done?
  • is there any pro/con to going with the big names like reveal vs. small places?
  • how many treatments did you need and how often were they?
  • did it work? (from what I've heard it works best the more contrast their is between your hair and skin colors, is that true?)
  • did it hurt?
  • any ballpark on the cost?
  • any other things to consider?

TIA!

I so, if you had laser hair removal:

    • where did you go/what did you get done? Reveal Medspa in Arlington
    • is there any pro/con to going with the big names like reveal vs. small places?  Not sure - there's a medspa closer to the house but they were just getting started in the laser hair removal when I had mine done.
    • how many treatments did you need and how often were they? 6 treatments over a matter of a year
    • did it work? (from what I've heard it works best the more contrast their is between your hair and skin colors, is that true?)  I had my bikini line and underarms done and my hair was black - I still have hair, especially underarms.  The hair at my Bikini line is definitely more sporadic but not completely gone.  (I now do brazillian waxes).
    • did it hurt? Kinda sorta... Underarms no... Bikini line hurt only the further they went down - towards your hooha.
    • any ballpark on the cost? $2500
    • any other things to consider? Its definitely something I could had spent $2500 on elsehwere.  Sorry to say that but mine wasn't that successful - at least not to my expectations.  Additionally, Reveal charges a hefty fee for cancellations/changes to appointments.

    TIA!

  • Thanks - this is really helpful!  I'd definitely be disappointed if I still had hair I had to deal with after all that!

  • I haven't had it done, but I've heard from people who have and have gone on to have more kids that being pregnant and the hormones from that will stimulate hair growth so to wait to do it until done having kids.

  • My friend bought a laser that she uses at home for a few hundred bucks. However, I don't think they are as powerful as the ones at those centers. The pp was correct that lasers work better if there is a big contrast between the skin color and hair color. It's something related to the technology. My friend used to work for a company that manufactures laser products. I might not be explaining this exactly right but I think she said something to the effect that the laser needs to be able to distinguish between the skin and the hair so that it can target the hair. If the colors are too close together, the laser doesn't apply as much power because it doesn't want to burn your skin (rather than the hair) and it can't tell which is which if the colors are too close. That's probably a totally wrong way of explaining it but I think that's basically what I remember her telling me. She also said the at-home lasers don't work that great unless you are an "ideal" candidate.

FWIW, I use an epilady for hair removal. Over time, it makes your hair grow back thinner. I don't use it on my underarms but I do use it on my bikini area and legs. I like it because it has the effect of waxing without having to go somewhere and pay money.

You are a brave lady - I tried using something similar last summer and OUCH! I couldn't take it - and that was on my leg, lol.  I was really hoping it would work for me - I hate having to find time to go somewhere and pay too

guess I might just stick to nair as long as i'm not PG or BF Stick out tongue

Yeah, it took a while to get used to but I've been doing it for about 8 years so it's not that big of a deal anymore. It doesn't hurt at all on my legs but there are parts of the bikini area which are still hard to do.
