Pre-paying OB and hospital (Northside) before delivery

Hello everyone. This is my first post here. I am currently 29 weeks pregnant and delivering at Northside.

Is there anyone else that is delivering at Northside that is having to pre-pay the OB and hospital before delivery. I was told this by the woman with Patient Affairs at my OB appt last week and it caught me off guard. My worry is overpaying at the end of everything especially considering the new year=new deductible (I have BCBS-GA POS Open Access plan if that makes any difference).

Thank you for any insight!

Re: Pre-paying OB and hospital (Northside) before delivery

  • I think it's standard practice at Northside now.  I didn't have to pay anything to my OB's office though.  I ended up having a c-section and got a bill for the extra after delivery.  You also may end up with a bill from the anesthesiologist and the new-baby pediatricians in the hospital.  Just depends on your insurance and the care you receive.

  • They requested to pay both prior. But, I told Northside I would pay when I checked out.  Mainly because I didn't want them just sitting on my money and then telling me to pay a different amount etc...  So I just waited until check-out.  My OB's office was really rude about making me pay when I KNEW United covered it 100% (including my section).  I paid anyway and got a refund for the full amount about 6 weeks after birth.

  • I've recently had the same thing happen to me as well, I'm under a new insurance carrier, as I switched jobs between baby # 1 and baby # 2 AND it seems like I'm totally going to pay so much more for baby # 2 :(  All I paid for baby #1 was the $250 admission fee at the hospital along with I think a $100 OB office fee.  I did read in my paperwork that if you end up over paying they will refund the overcharged fees.  So we shall see...
  • Wait a hot second. Are y'all saying that they are expecting to you to pay for all charges up front even though you have insurance? If so, Id be saying hell no to that. A copay is one thing but all charges? No way. Have you spoken to your insurance? I had BCBS w/ both kids and delivered at kennestone and didn't pay anything up front. Only paid copay in the hospital and all else was billed later.

  • Just tell them no and pay Northside when you check out. I have done this both times and it is still a mess to deal with all of the other bills (anesthesiologist, nursery pedi, etc and I have great insurance) that attempting a refund would be even more of a pita! I also do not prepay my OB. With 2 kids already, the chances of reaching my deductable before my July delivery is high. I am not going to go ahead and pay them my remaining deductable. I know it will be paid somewhere, but it irritates me that they want it so far in advance. Just say no...they might act irritated but who cares. They have no reason to hold your money.

  • I paid my OB in advance, mostly bc we had already met our deductible and we have good insurance, so it wasn't that much out of pocket. To me, it was nice to know that expense was taken care of and it for on-going care. To me the OB payment was different. Once I paid them, that was it. No co-pays etc. When I was pregnant with A, I started getting calls from Northside wanting me to pay them around 7 months. This did not happen with H. There was no way in heck I was paying them when I hadn't even been admitted, much less delivered!   I refused to pay Northside beforehand and just screened their calls. When I delivered and it was time to checkout they wanted me pay then. They had messed up my insurance and the bill was much higher than it should have been. I refused to pay at it at checkout and told them to send me a bill when they got things right. They finally got their act together and sent me a correct bill which I paid promptly. I think it's ridiculous they want you to pay upfront so far in advance when really, you have no idea what will happen or what the circumstances might be. I also have a friend who's insurance company told her not to pay until she was checking out. You could check with your insurance company for advice if you want.

They supposedly contacted my insurance company and estimated what a normal, vaginal delivery would cost (co-pays, deductibles, etc.)  I have United Healthcare and think it was something like $1600??  I hadn't met my deductible.  Paid that much before I went in, and then got a second bill later on, after they took into account my c-section.  Never got ANY charges from my OB though - it was all covered.  I DID get a bill from Pediatrix (the doctor's that cared for the girls in the hospital).  I had no idea I could have refused to pay ahead - I would definitely have done that!!

  • Yes, I delivered at Northside in November and pre-paid based on what my insurance company told them I would have to pay (co-pay, deductible, etc.).  I also pre-paid my OB's office based on what my insurance company estimated I would owe.  I think this is pretty common but I do not think it is required, so if you don't want to pre-pay you can probably talk to them about it.  You would be required to pay before leaving the hospital, though, I think so it's one more thing to deal with then.

  • Thank you everyone for your responses! It's nice to know that there is that option to say 'no' and pay afterwards. Though it may be easier to pay beforehand as the last thing we want to worry about is paying up before we leave the hospital! It's something to talk to my husband about. It sounds like the OB's office may be a pain to deal with. Ugh. If Kennestone doesn't make you prepay, I may be heading there for the next delivery. Getting a bill in the mail is so much easier imo.

  • Yes I had to pay both the OB and Northside before I got there.  Having a baby cost a fortune and I had a normal delivery with a midwife.

Seriously, the more people I talk to about their experiences at Northside, the happier I am that I delivered at Kennestone!  I had an absolutely amazing experience both times. DS was in the NICU and those folks were wonderful.  And OMG, I can't say enough good things about the LC's.  They were there within minutes of birth and I saw them every single day in the hospital.  And after we went home... they called to check on us.  They wrote to check on us.  They emailed to check on us.  Seriously... wonderful wonderful place.  I was spoiled!

I go to the same practice as you and delivered at Kennestone as well and am thankful that neither tried to make me pay upfront.  I really wouldn't want to deal with getting reimbursed later.  I just met with someone at the OB about our bill and she specifically said don't pay us anything until we bill you just to make it easier.  I thought this was the way everyone did it until someone brought this up recently on my Birth Month Board and all but a few people said they were required to pay thousands of dollars upfront.  I didn't think a hospital could make you pay in advance though?  Even with insurance, we couldn't have done that anyway.  We set up payment plans.

All of this. I can't imagine pre-paying. This whole post makes me appreciate Piedmont even more than I already do.

  • I had a great experience at northside with ds1. The LCs were great and nurses were great. The 2nd time they pretty much left me alone unless I needed something which was fine. It had only been 15 months btw births. Sometimes northside gets a bad rap bc they see so many patients of course there are rough experiences. Personally most of my friends delivered there with good and great experiences.

With all three of mine, my OB calls my insurance and they tell my OB what I will have to pay. With ds1 it was at the end of the year so all I had to pay was $100 universal OB fee. I ended up paying my deductible and coinsurance to northside for all my ptl visits. After that we got a POS plan with no deductibles or coinsurance so I've only paid $100 to the OB for both ds2 and this time. My insurance covers the hospital and everythig else  100%. It's very normal for them to get your insurance to estimate the amount you will pay then have you pay it upfront.

Its not all charges. It's the amount you are responsible for through your insurance so your deductible and any percentage of coinsurance. It's all based on your insurance.

  • I'm delivering at Northside and they haven't said anything about pre-paying...And my OB hasn't asked me to pre-pay either.  I have Aetna POS and when I went in for my first appointment, the billing specialist said something about global billing (so I get billed for everything at the very end...at least, that's how I understood it)

This. I had global billing at Intown Midwifery. With BCBSGA, I paid $15 at my first visit and didn't pay again. Worked the same when I delivered at Piedmont with AWOG.

Fingers crossed, but the only thing I've paid this pregnancy was when I handed them my debit card at Atlanta Medical Center to pay the $200 co-pay for hospital admittance.
