Pregnant after a Loss

Pregnancies Immediately After Miscarriage

Hello! My husband and I found out we were pregnant on January 16th. On January 22nd (5 weeks along) I started bleeding, went to the ER, and found out that I was having a miscarriage. They gave me a urine pregnancy test which came back negative. They also took my blood to get an HCG count and it came back at only 20. That is very low since I should have been somewhere in the thousands by that point. I bled until January 29th. My husband and I had a momentary lapse in judgement on February 6th and had unprotected sex. We had just visited our best friends in the hospital after having their baby and it seemed like a good idea at the time. Almost everything I have read says that you should wait until after your next period, at the very least, to try getting pregnant again. My question is: Have any of you gotten pregnant immediately after a miscarriage and gone on to have a healthy pregnancy without miscarrying again? Thanks!

Re: Pregnancies Immediately After Miscarriage

  • I am sorry for your loss.

I have had both. I miscarried at 7w1d back in July (blighted ovum). I got pregnant the next cycle, prior to getting my period. I miscarried again at 5 weeks (chemical). I got pregnant again in December, and had another chemical pregnancy. I got pregnant again prior to getting my period, and I am over 9 weeks today, and I have seen my baby's heartbeat twice, so I am feeling very positive about this pregnancy.

A lot of times, they tell you to wait partially for emotional healing, and the other part for your uterine lining to replenish (or whatever the technical term is). The farther along you are when you miscarry, generally the longer they tell you to wait. I saw 3 different doctors after all 3 of my miscarriages, and they all said it was okay for us to try again right away.

Good luck what happens either way!

  • I had a miscarriage 2 years ago, and got pregnant immediately following that, no period.  While I didnt miscarry again, I ended up pg with identical twins who shared a placenta.  We had other problems, that you wouldnt normally have with a singleton pregnancy.

It is possible to get pregnant immediately following a miscarriage and go on to have a happy healthy pregnancy.

  • First I just want to say that I am very sorry for your loss. With that being said, the pregnancy that I am on now was not a month apart. We had our second m/c on 1-1-12...terrible way to start off the new year! On 1-26-12 (I believe don't quote me I dont wanna go get my tracker right now!) We got another BFP against my OB's advice. This is the ONLY pregnancy that hasn't ended in a c/p! I have had all labs done and my hcg levels drawn three seperate times! Last week my ob called back and said they not only expect to see a baby but a heartbeat as well!

So even though they suggest it...you don't have to take their advice as gospel!

I just wanted to chime in and let you know that my good friend had a miscarriage, then got pregnant after her third AF, and miscarried again... then got pregnant immediately afterward--before having her first AF. She now has a gorgeous baby girl. It's TOTALLY possible.

It was a rough road, but Arlo Daniel was born April 1, 2013—and our second rainbow is due October 12, 2014.
  • After our m/c my doc only asked that we wait the 1-2 week (?) span after the D&C to give my cervix time to fully close.  She told us that statistically women have a higher likelihood of carrying to term when they conceive right after a m/c.  I did get my period about a month after the D&C, but We conceived that cycle.  I have seen the HB and baby 2 times, and am keeping my FX that everything goes smoothly this time around.  GL!

  • I have! I had a CP and started bleeding Nov 1st, then got a BFP on Nov 30th. I'm 15 weeks today! It is possible to have a healthy pg right after m/c.

  • My mother in law about 41 yrs ago had a m/c then right afterwards she got pg again (like a week or two after the m/c) well that pg turned into my sister in law- who is doing just fine!

it can happen, and it can happen with a good out come- but I would suggest waiting at least until after your next period or doing what the dr says

DH and I didn't have sex at all until after I had a period (which didn't happen for 9 long weeks!) just cus I was too nervous.

  • Sorry for your loss. I am not in the same boat, but I know of plenty of women that have had successful pregnancies without an AF after a m/c. It is ideal to listen to whatever your doctor says as far as waiting, but since you are already pregnant just ask your doctor to monitor your betas if you are concerned at all.

  • Firstly, if you are pregnant again, good luck & best wishes for a healthy pregnancy.

I guess I'm going to be Debbie Downer here. During my missed m/c and D&C, my OB had a family emergency and I saw whatever doctors were on call. We were told it wasn't necessary to wait past a couple of weeks. I got pregnant again right away and lost that pregnancy at 5.5 weeks. After that m/c, we saw my usual OB and she recommended waiting 2 normal cycles. We did, and I am now pregnant again.

Of course, your situation is not the same as mine, and your doctor's recommendation will depend on your particular history. Good luck!

  • I'm sorry for your loss. Most drs are in agreement that you don't need to wait after a chemical pregnancy (natural loss occurring before 6w).

The main benefit of waiting after a c/p is for dating, but an early ultrasound can easily date the pregnancy.

Fir later losses, or those requiring a d+c, it is best to talk to your dr about ttc again first.

DD was on the heels of a c/p.

  • I've had both situations.

In October, at 10w a blighted ovum was found and I had to have a D&C.  We got the OK to try right away, but it ended in a chemical that next cycle.  I suspect it was because my lining wasn't ready, because I did not bleed very much at all.

The cycle after the chemical, I got pregnant again, and so far, so good.  We have seen the baby's HB twice and he/she is growing right on target.

  • Sorry for your loss.

I had an early miscarriage (5 weeks), and was pregnant 6 weeks later (I felt fine and OB said ok).   I am now 23 weeks....

    Good luck!

  • I am sorry for your loss.

I got pg w/ my DS the cycle following a CP (which it sounds like you also experienced a chemical pg as well). He is the love of my life!!!
