toddler nursing question. possible weaning?

I just posted this to FB, but thought I would try here too:

So S, who is almost 20 months, is being weird about nursing. At night, she will latch on, but she just sort of creates suction and then lays there. She'll suck every once in a while, but she's not getting any milk (I don't think). She does this a few times during the day also. I work from home, so she can nurse whenever she wants. Up until now it's been at least a few times a day. Now she will ask for milk and do this weird thing - described above. She only really nursed once yesterday.

I'm trying to figure out if I'm not producing (I can express milk when she does this) or if she is "forgetting" how to nurse (I've read some of your LO's have forgotten how to latch) or if she is trying to wean? I have no idea what is going on.

Last night, after a while, I just unlatched her because the feeling is pretty annoying, and she rolled over and laid there for a few minutes, trying to fall asleep. After a while I asked her if she wanted milk and she said yes. She did get some milk and fell asleep really fast.

DD does a similar thing but she has been sick. She basically wants her 'mama milk' all the time and not necessarily to get any milk, but to get the comfort of snuggling with me. I think being ill has been the main part of this. I don't think this means weaning but just that the comfort is the most important part of nursing at this point. DD started doing exactly this, not sucking very much, as her bedtime session which is why I recently asked a question on this board about which session that was the last one to go. Seems like the night sessions are often earlier to go than the morning one. This evening DD just sucked a bit and then pointed at her crib (yeahhh, I'm so proud of her, she is so good at falling asleep herself now).

    This makes sense.

I remember your post! I do think it is comfort - because, man, does she want to be on that boob. Except she isn't really doing anything. She is not quite at the point of figuring out how to fully get to sleep on her now, but I think she is trying to figure it out. Perhaps that is part of figuring it out.

I will be sad if she wants to fully wean already - but it would be nice to get down to 2 sessions or so per day.

LouiseB - how is your LO eating? DD had finally started eating alot. Well, more than before. She at least eats something at each meal, plus some snacking.
