Dresser as changing table, anyone?

With my DS's I had a true changing table. It wasn't anything expensive, and after 2 boys, 2 moves, and a hubby who opens drawers at the speed of light and rips them off their tracks constantly, it was trashed.  Now i'm using a dresser in the nursery as a changing table. How are you affixing the pad to the top of the dresser for safety? Or are you? As a newborn I don't see it as being an issue, but as baby gets bigger and more wiggly I want to make sure it doesn't slide off or something. The dresser is just a flat top, no back ridge or anything.

  • Our changing pad came with a strap and all other needed equipment to secure it to the top of the dresser. It doesn't slide at all!

  • Our pad comes with a strap, but I never used it. I had absolutely no issues with it sliding when DD was little.
  • I didn't want to screw anything into the dresser since it's an antique. So I just put a rug grippy pad underneath the changing pad and it doesn't move too much at all. Should be fine!

  • I use a dresser.  I have not affixed the pad to the top of the dresser.  It seems like a non-issue to me because I don't ever leave DD on the table alone.

She's quite large now (17 months) and it is still working fine for us.

  • Our pad also came with a strap, but I never used it.  We cut a small rectangle of that rubber shelf liner stuff and put it under the pad and never had an issue with it moving...and DD is quite the wiggler!

  • Ours has a no-slip backing but I'm going to get some of that shelf liner stuff (see link below) to put under it since I'll have one of those cover things over the actual pad...

One of the families I used to nanny for just had one on top of the dresser w/o any way of securing it and I don't remember it ever sliding around etc. We switched to changing on the floor once the kid was bigger though so maybe that's why it wasn't an issue.

  • We used the dresser.  Our changing pad had a grippy back.. which worked very well. It did wear off onto the dresser though.. and we haven't attempted to remove the residue from the dresser quite yet b/c we're still using the changing pad.
  • I'm planning to use the rug gripper or rubber shelving paper stuff.
  • We didn't secure it... the darn thing was only used twice.... one if those times was for his newborn pictures! I am changing out to a pink cover for DD, but I don't expect to use it ;0)

  • Dh attached the strap and thought it was too wiggly so he went out and bought Velcro to attach to the dresser.

  • i have never owned one..i just threw a blanket down and changed my kids..
  • We are using a built in desk as a changing table. It has built in shelves above it so it won't work forever. I'm not attaching the pad to it. By the time she is squirmy enough to need that, Ill just start throwing a towel on the bed (in the attached room) and change her there.

This. Ours slides a little, but no where near falling off. It made the most sense for us. I didn't want to clutter up the room with a changing table besides all the rest of the furniture, and now I'm glad we didn't since the kids will be sharing a room for a while. We have an armoir that we store a bunch of extra stuff in, including extra diapers.

  • We might go the dresser route. I am planning to put non-skid backing on a regular changing pad and that's it. I used to change babies at a daycare with one hand all the time, so I am sure with two hands, I can always keep one on my baby and use the other hand for the dirty work.

  • we have ours in a tray on top of the dresser. the tray has rubber feet to keep it from sliding, which seems to work great. I hadn't intended on using a tray, but a friend gave us theirs:

The dresser we are getting has the same feature with snaps on the back to hold it in place.

  • I got the changer top from Land of Nod and it comes with the materials to secure it to the dresser but I don't think we're doing it because I don't want to ruin the dresser. It seems really secure and it's in a corner up against two walls so I don't think it has room to wiggle but now that I see PPs suggestions of grippy shelf paper I'm going to try that!

  • My sister somehow attached hers to the back of her dresser.
