Austin Babies

Yay, sleep! Boo, clogged duct.

i took the advice of running white noise all night long, and the kid managed to sleep from 8-3, eat, down again easily until 6:45am. i'm so glad we finally got a break, and i really really hope it's not a fluke.

downside is since he skipped a night feeding, my right side was left to just sit there unused for 10 hours, and i now have an annoying clogged duct taunting me at work. i got 4 oz out this morning without a letdown just on that side, but i need to get it ALLLL out.

any tips to get this thing moving while i'm stuck at work?

  • Congratulations!  And, I'm sorry!  :-(  Do you have something that you can heat up with warm water to lay on your breast?  If so, do that before and maybe while pumping.  And massage, massage, massage.  That's all I've got, hopefully someone else has more for you.

so glad you got some good sleep last night!

  • Ditto Brooke, but also take ibuprofen right now! It will ease the swelling, allowing milk to flow more easily, and help prevent mastitis. And pump every couple of hours. Don't be surprised if you get a slight temp.

good call on the ibuprofen. i think my "gentle" massaging (more like "get the hell out of my armpit" massaging) was causing more swelling.

  • Definitely pump as much as you can while at work.  I'm not sure what else you might be able to do at work other than pump and massage.  When you get home, use a heating pad and then feed or pump as much as possible.  This definitely helped me last week when I had mastitis.  Ditto the ibuprofen too!  Hopefully it unclogs without issue!

    ETA:  Hooray for sleep!!

  • I'm not advocating for this option while at work because even when you're at home you may feel weird doing it, but I found this was the fastest way to unclog ducts the 3 times I had them.  Read it on kellymom and laughed at craziness of it, but when I got desperate, I tried it and it worked.  Get on all fours and pump so that gravity helps the milk come out.  I would end up balancing on my head so I could hold the pump parts since I didn't have a pump bra.  I also put a heating pad on first.

hmm... i just may try that if it doesn't get moving soon!
