CIO at night...how long at 8 months??

Ladies, I need your advice.  DH has a hard time letting the boys CIO in the middle of the night.  Quick to jump and give them a bottle.  Well, we decided to try to let them do it a little bit this week and we slept downstairs with the monitor so we wouldn't be as tempted to jump up and go to them.  Well the first night the did great and both STTN.  However, last night was a mess and we ended up giving them a little formula.  How long should I be letting them cry before going in?  DH is hunting this weekend so I thought I could try something to hopefully help us get this going in the right direction.  TIA!!

  • For us, it depended on what kind of cry they were doing. If they were crying off and on, we just let them go as long as it took. If the off and on crying went to full on wailing, I would go in give back the blankie and the binky, do a little butt patting and go out when whoever was settled down some. If it's full on hard crying- no off and on crying at all, I go in after about 5 minutes. Sometimes, I have to pick her up to get her to settle down some. I just give her a blankie and her bink and rock for a few minutes until her heart has slowed down some, her breathing is more regular... If she does it again, we wait about 10 mins...

  • One DS has been STTN for about a month.  The other finally reduced down to only getting up once a night.  When he wakes he wants to eat.  I personally saw it as two different issues, one he is waking to eat and the other, he was not going down easily after eating.

I think it was reganB (sorry if I got it wrong) shared that she used a method where you reduce the intake by half an ounce every 3 days.  We have been doing that and E is now only getting 3.5oz when he wakes in the night to eat.

Second problem, he stays awake after we feed him.  On Sunday we started trying CIO.  The first night we gave up after he screamed for 45 minutes.  We would go in every 5 minutes to rub his back and calm him, but then he would start screaming again (NOT crying, screaming).  The next night he fell asleep after 45 minutes, the following night after 30, then the next night 10 minutes and now last night he just grunted a few times and fell right to sleep.  We will continue weaning him off the bottle (I hope) but it looks like the CIO is helping with falling back to sleep.  Good luck this weekend, with us it was the opposite DH wanted to do it and I was the one that was not able to handle it  :)

  • I agree with pp, it completely depends on the type of cry that the boys are doing.  When we put them down for naps, we let them do the fussy type of cry until they fall asleep.  If it escalates and they are at a danger of waking their brother, then we go get him.  Most of the time, we just pick them up when they are screaming really hard and rock them and they will eventually fall asleep.  Josh is more apt to wake up after this procedure once or twice, but eventually he goes down.  HTH!
  • Ha...I can't help to think that if this post was on the 0-6 mo board they would be going apeshit...

They're cool but they are VERY anti CIO over there.  Of course most of them only have ONE baby.

  • Hi Megan,

I didn't read the other replies yet but I HIGHLY recommend the Dr Ferber's sleep book. ?It worked well for us and it's also very informative about sleep. ?Sleep training stinks but it's better for you AND for the babies at this age. ?
