Looks like EPing for us

DD just wouldn't latch or suckle well, but she does great with a bottle. She had really bad gas pains four nights in a row and was screaming in pain so we decided to try bottles. The last two nights have been amazing. Right now I just have a manual pump, so I will have to invest in an electic soon. Any recommendations on one that is on the cheaper end of the spectrum?

Re: Looks like EPing for us

  • From my experience (not that I have a ton) You get what you pay for in reagrds to pumps.  Or maybe its just my continued bad luck.  I got a single electric pump (Tommee Tippee brand)  After I started EPing it lasted about a week.

The pump started to lose suction and make funny noises.  I posted on a couple of the boards here and asked for recommendations and talked to other moms I know.  The resounding answer was the Medela Pump in Style Advanced.  Pricey yes....But for me soooo worth it.  When you are pumping multiple times a day you really need a good pump.

  • I have the Medela while not cheap it is really nice. You might see if your insurance will help you get one. Also, my LO does not like to latch so I got a nipple shield and he now latches onto the shield and I am teaching him to latch onto the nipple. You could always give that a shot.
  • I had trouble getting DD to latch (small mouth + flat nipples = not good) and used the nipple shield. It helped a lot!! We are officially weaned off it already and DD can now easily latch on without any problems.

I just bought the PISA (metro bag version) and really like it. It's easy to use, pretty quiet and I like that the motor can be carried around without a huge bag. For a cheaper pump, I've heard good things about the Ameda Purely Yours from the BFing board.

ETA: And definitely check with insurance if they'll cover it. Especially if you can get a dr.'s note saying it's necessary due to issues with latching. Otherwise you should be able to have your FSA reimburse you (if you do FSA).

  • Like previous posters have said, the Medela is great.  To put it into perspective, I have one that has now been used by my sister-in-law (through two children) and her cousin.  While it may seem like a lot of money at the time (I know it can be hard to come up with that money) in the long run it'll be worth it, especially if you plan on more than one child.

  • W tried a shield, which she took, but still wouldn't latch right and I couldn't wean her off of it. I think it's because she wouldn't suckle right. She is doing great with the bottle. I'm happy and she is happy. She slept amazing last night. She has gained a pound and grew 2 inches in 2 weeks!

  • Talk to your pediatrician and ask for a prescription.  If your baby doesn't latch, many insurance companies will pay for a good pump- I had a $15 copay for a Medela Pump in Style.  The cheap ones are really not meant for the amount of pumping you'll need.  And see a lactation consultant.  I had this issue with both newborns, and in time both were able to latch (8 weeks for one, 6 weeks for the other).  My first daughter ended up nursing 20 months!  We started with a nipple shield and pumping, and then just kept trying until it all came together.  Good luck!

  • If you plan to EP you don't want to get a cheap pump.  It will likely die out and you'll have to replace it anyways.  I got the Medela PISA when I was EPing and it lasted all 9 months of EPing and 1 month so far for this LO with me pumping once a day.  I highly recommend it and haven't seen anyone say anything bad about it.
Keep in mind though, if you're still establishing a supply you should rent a hospital grade pump.  For at least the first month is what my LC suggested.
