Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to share a story with all of you that will be of particular interest to the Mommy's of boys.
At my DS#2's 6 month well visit our pediatrician informed us that his circumcision didn't appear to be complete (i.e. they didn't take enough off) and that we should consult with a pediatric urologist to see what next steps should be taken. The peditrician explained that Dr's performing circumcisions on newborns tend to be more conservative which is what probably happened in this case. DS#1 happened to be with us at the appointment so asked the pediatrician to look at him as well. She said it looked like there was more skin than she would like to see.
Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago when we had to have both boys re-circumcised. Full on: children's hospital, general anasthesia, stitches, recovery, etc. They were both SO good during everything. DS#2 didn't even skip a beat. But for us parents, NIGHTMARE!!
To say that I'm glad that it is all behind us is an understatement. They are both doing great and are healing very nicely, but I'm still a bit stressed and somewhat in disbelief that this happened.
Both boys were circumcised by different Dr.'s at the same hospital. before we went through this I had heard of one other person going through this type of procedure with her DS. I wonder how often this happens???? I imagine it's not the type of thing people talk about openly as we only shared with people on a need to know basis. I don't know what we'll do if we have DS#3...bring in our own plastic surgeon?!
(P.S.: I really don't want to debate whether or not boys should be circumcised or not because I believe it is a personal decision to be made by the parents.)
Re: FYI for Mom's of Baby Boys (long)
That sucks! I'm sorry you all had to go through that.
Our pedi is the one that did the circ on Andrew in the hospital, so of course he says it looks great. My sister (also a pedi) looked at it when he was a week old and said it looks great so I guess I have to trust that. Hopefully we don't have to go through a re-do like your boys did.
Yea, my peditrician doesn't have rights at the hospital that I had the boys due to the different geographic region. (I didn't want to change my OB practice when we moved.) In both instances, it was the on call peditrician that did it.
Like I said, just glad it's over with!!
Your little guy is super cute. I love reading your blog when I find a minute. Glad that you're doing well!!
