when's your LO's last daytime nap?

I'm having trouble getting LO to be awake in the evenings, he wants to nap anywhere from 6pm to 9pm it is usually a 2 hour nap... He's not sleeping great through the night and I'm thinking it may be because of this nap... ugh...trying everything to get more hours at night!!

Re: when's your LO's last daytime nap?

  • OMG, I have NO idea!!!!  These posts always make me feel so guilty b/c it reinforces that fact that I am truly "winging" it with DD!!!  I'm so busy with the boys, I have no idea about any type of schedule with her.  This is really going to bite me in the butt soon.  I'm anxious to read the answers, maybe I will try to start working into a schedule based on some of yours!!!

  • Usually DD is exhausted by the end of the day b/c she doesn't nap well at the sitters hosue. So I usually have to put her to sleep as soon as I get home around 5:00. I try to let her sleep until about 7 or 7:30. Then I've been waking her for her last feeding of the day and then putting her down for the night. BUT, I think I'm going to try letting her sleep as long as she wants and see how she does that night since she is waking more at night here recently.

  • Carter does that 90 minute cycle I read about on here a while ago... but he basically put himself on that routine... He does nap at night though, sometimes as late as 7:30 until maybe 9, then he's up til about 10, then he sleeps 10-5, then eats goes right back down til about 8:30. KNOCK ON WOOD, the last few nights, he's been going down about 9:30 and sleeping until 7:30!  But he still sticks to that up for an hour/hour and half and sleeps for an hour and half/two hours, all day long.

  • That's what my DS use to do so that's when we started a bedtime routine.  After his 6:30 or 7 bottle we start the routine.  Usually we will play/cuddle on the couch for about 20-30 min. then when he starts to fuss I'll get him in the bath (he loves bath time), then lotion and massage, we usually top him off with 3 oz and rock then sleepy time!  He's in bed by 8-8:30.  After doing this routine for a couple weeks I noticed a dramatic change in his sleep habits.  He use to wake up 2-3 times to eat at night, then it went to 1-2 and now he's STTN (10 hrs)!

  • It just depends on how his schedule is going for the day. He gets overtired if he is up for longer than about 90 minutes so he usually takes 3 or 4 naps during the day. We shoot for a bedtime between 8:30 and 9:30 depending on when the last nap ends. He will usually take his nap somewhere between 6 and 8. It seems crazy that he can nap that late but it works for us. He usually has a 7 hour stretch at first and then wakes to eat for a few minutes before going back to sleep and wakes up for the day between 7-8:30 a.m.
  • It literally varies from day to day but LO will nap around 4 or so and sleeps for a bit.  She is usually up until about 7 or 8...sometimes 9.  Those are usually the hours that are in between feedings, so we put her to bed around 10 or 10:30 (when we go) whether she has eaten or not. For example, if she has eaten at 7 p.m., she would eat again around 11....if she's not awake, we put her to bed anyway.  She has been sleeping until about 2:30 or 3.  Gets up, eats, and goes back down again.

  • Ds eats every 2-3 hours. I try to follow the eat play sleep cycle although at night we don't stick to that. He takes his last nap anywhere from 430- 530... Then wakes up eats and I keep him up until his last feeding before "bed"

  • She usually takes a short nap somewhere between 6:30 and 7:00 for about 30 minutes, just enough time to eat dinner.  Then down for the night between 9:30 and 10:00pm.

  • _When he takes this long evening nap, is he in his crib/bassinet/PNP? I'm asking because my DD naps after daycare, but we don't put her where she sleeps at night. I did that once and regretted it because she slept for two hours and was up all night. She takes about a 45 nap next to me on the couch, on her playmat, or in the swing - wherever she fell asleep. That way she hears the TV, us talking, and all the commotion with making dinner, taking showers, loading the dishwasher, etc. I think it helps her to know it's not really bedtime yet. Also, if she goes longer than 45 minutes, I wake her up for her bath and to play a little more before she has her last bottle-

He sleeps in his swing or PNP during the day, we also didn't want to confuse the crib with daytime/nighttime sleep.  We've tried waking him up but he is very grumpy when woken up from his nap and won't play. Unfortunatley he's not a big fan of his baths yet so we don't do that as part of his routine.

  • If he's really tired he'll usually take a cat nap before 6..but if it's been more than 30 minutes or if it's after 6 I will wake him up, play with him, or start bathtime. We aim to start the bedtime routine around 7pm and hopefully he'll be asleep by 8, then he usually sleeps until 4:30.

I've had multiple people tell me that you should really shoot for a 7pm-7am ish schedule, and that babies need to get solid sleep in the evenings (times when grown-ups would still consider daytime). If your LO wants to sleep during the early evening, then put him to bed, don't consider it a nap. You say he is not great sleeping through the night, but you should be considering the 6-9 pm timeframe as "the night". My suggestion: start his bedtime routine (we do bath, lotion, jammies, sleep sack, rocking to sleep) at about 6:00-6:30 and then put him to bed - don't keep him in the living areas with you, put him in his bassinette or crib, whereever he sleeps for the night. Even if he gets up to feed before you go to bed, it is better for him than you trying to keep him up. Sleep begets sleep, so trying to keep him up longer in order to have him sleep throught the night is probably making things worse.

Plus this gives you some alone time in the evenings.

This what I've been doing. We've learned by trial and error that if he actually goes down in his bed at 7:30 that he will wake up more frequently through the night. Instead he cat naps around 7:30-9:30ish then he is up and eats we play and then we go to sleep for the night around 10-11. He will then sleep anywhere between 5-8 hours straight. His last really solid nap is from 1:30-4:05 like clockwork everyday.

  • His last nap is usually in the car on the way home from daycare - so it lasts from 4:15-5ish.  Then he's up until we start our bedtime routine between 7-7:30

  • My LO usually takes an early evening snooze around 7:30.  She typically takes her last bottle around 8:30(ish) so her evening nap can go for an hour sometimes.
