Booster seat

DS is 40 pounds and 44 inches. I am leaving him in his marathon in my car until he maxes the height out. But, in DH's car, as well as my mom's he has outgrown the Cosco. Can you recommend an economical booster that has good safety reviews? Also, when we are ready to switch him in my car is the britax frontier the way to go? Thanks!

Re: Booster seat

  • I just did a post on this because I just bought a booster seat a few days ago and I thought I would share the research I did in case someone else was looking for a booster.  I traded in one at Babies R Us so I needed to buy a new one there- they didn't have all the ones on the IIHS list - I went with the Graco Turboboster Elite which was I think $70 or so (I got 25% off for trading in something else) but I haven't used it yet.  I also want to wait until my son outgrows his and will use it only for a 2nd car now.  I think anything on the IIHS best bet list is trustworthy so it really comes down to color and style of what you like and the price you want to pay.

Here is my post from the other day

I was just researching boosters and I thought I would save people time if you're looking too.  The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety just put this out in October - they do all the crash testing that you hear about for cars, car seats and boosters.  It has the list of 51 boosters that passed their inspection plus a short tutorial on how the lap belt and shoulder belt should fit.  Hope it helps!

  • If you're thinking harnessed boosters, then I totally recommend the Frontier (I have two) - it also does well in booster only mode. The Graco Nautilus is good too, some people who have tried both seemed to prefer the Frontier. Also, price wise the Evenflo Maestro is great too, high top harness height (close to the Frontier and Nautilus, which are the highest on the market), and does much better as a booster only compared to the Generations/Chase (which aren't as recommended).

The Frontier is a good choice for your ds at 3, who height and weight is close to fitting a belt only booster, but likely too young to sit properly with any consistancy. My dd (K) was as tall as your ds at 3 (although she hasn't hit 40lbs yet), and we moved her out of her Radian and into the Frontier (our rf weight limit was reached, lower here). She still has room to grow, and so does E, and both are quite tall for their age. I'm also quite happy to have them both contained driving on the highway.
