getting LO to sleep (esp in public)

after the "taking LO out" thread i figured maybe someone could help.  i can't seem to get my LO to sleep in public, and not sure if there's anything i can do to change it.

a little background: my LO is 11.5 weeks old. he is often tired after only 1-1.5 hours of being awake, but generally falls right asleep with some rocking and pacifier (which comes out before i put him down). i swaddle him, otherwise he punches himself in the face and wakes himself up. he takes several 45 min naps and usually one longer one from about 10-1 each day, and sleeps from 6-5/6 with one wakeup although bedtime varies anywhere from 5:30-7 depending on nap times.

he wails everytime i try to put him in the k'tan or ergo baby, and doesn't fall asleep in his car seat. right now i wait until he wakes up, feed/change him, and then go out for about an hour. i'd love to stay out longer but don't want him to suffer. anyone have any suggestions?

Re: getting LO to sleep (esp in public)

  • Fortunately, LO has never had a problem sleeping out in public. We had him out so early so it was something he got used to doing. When we are out he sleeps in my arms or either in his car seat, just depending on the situation.

Ill be honest, when he naps at home I hold him. Horrible habit but the one benefit is that he can at least nap really well when we are out and about.

  • Maybe when your LO starts to fuss and get sleepy, you could get back in the car and drive to your next errand. My LO usually falls asleep in the car if I drive around for long enough. She also does well if I put her in the moby wrap or bjorn. She cries at first, but I give her a paci, bounce her for awhile (just sort of rocking motion) and shhh in her ear.  (I have the ergo too, which I'm eager to use, but I think it might be too big for LO at the moment. She's outgrown the insert, but without it, the ergo seems too roomy and uncomfortable for her legs).
  • Fortunately LO still falls asleep in the car and will sometimes stay asleep after the car stops moving, but you'll find that as they get older they won't really be able to do this as much and their naps will be at more set times so you'll just need to work around that.

  • How long do you try the k'tan or ergo?  D2 will wail but then I start walking and she'll fall asleep.  If she's not tired, then I'll face her out and she's happy to look around until she gets tired and falls asleep.

  • DD sleeps much better out than she does at home. She almost always falls asleep in the car and then stays asleep the whole time. If she doesn't she will fall asleep after about 5 mins of walking in the stroller if I push it in like an 'S' shape.

  • Mine only sleeps if there's motion, i.e. the cars moving or I'm swinging her carrier back and forth or her carrier is in a moving shopping cart.

  • Carter is kind of like that too. He like to be swaddled to fall asleep. He loves going in his stroller too and won't fall asleep in it for that reason, so when he gets tired, I stop, pick him up and swaddle him (we use the Aden & Anais blankets during the day) put him to sleep, put him back int he stroller and continue on my way! It's the way he sleeps best and I have come to learn I don't care what people say or the looks I get when he is all swaddled in his stroller!! :)
