flags in NJ half staff for Whitney?

article

Thoughts?

Don't get me wrong- I totally believe that she is a cultural icon as the governor states but I don't know that her death warrants this. Has it ever been done for another celebrity in entertainment? I know what my thoughts are on this but am having trouble putting it in print without being disrespectful. I was shocked that they are doing this.

  • I feel the honor should be reserved for far more deserving and influental people. To do this for a singer somehow cheapens what is an otherwise very ... moving... tradition. Everytime I see flags at half I think of 911. A fitting tribute to all the heroes who died. Whitney? Not so much.

Anyone else catch the irony of her daughter being "rushed" to the hospital and "treated" for anxiety? Do you know what they use to treat it? Sedatives. Ya know what probably killed her mom?        Grief hurts. Life hurts. We need to stop numbing emotional pain with drugs and learn to cope. Because when you can't cope anymore that's when the drugs control you and sometimes kill you =(

  • My first thought when I read the title was, "Who's Whitney?"  I love me some Whitney Houston, but flags at half staff for her didn't even enter my mind.  Yes, she is an icon but I don't think what she did with her life (entertainment) warrants such a special honor.

I agree with Taytee on drugs.  It is very, very sad all around.

  • New Jersey flew flags half mast when E-Street band member Clarence Clemons died of a stroke. No one complained. It's possible no one even noticed because his death didn't quite have the national attention that Houston's does. But this is clearly an established precedent.

I think it's not up to me to decide who "deserves" to be mourned versus who doesn't. If the people of New Jersey want to honor someone who was special to them this way, fine by me.

But it's up to someone right? Someone is the deserving filter.

  • I am saddened to say that when I see a flag at half staff lately, I don't even know whom it is for. It's over done, and has cheapened the entire tradition.

Honoring an addict who most likely died as a result of overdose is sad and sends out an interesting message as to the kind of people we respect in our society.

Officially, it's up to the Governor of NJ. Less officially, it's up to the people who loved her and her music and felt a connection to her. That may not be you or I, but I don't think it's our place to tell the others they can't or shouldn't mourn her.

She was a huge force during my childhood, so I can understand why people would want to honor her. Honestly, I wasn't the biggest fan, but I am sad that what she's being remembered for now is her addiction and possible drug-related death. Her career in the 80s and 90s was astounding. She was a beautiful singer, a best-selling artist and was recognized for that over and over again.

And about the addiction thing. I see where you guys are coming from, I really do. But addiction is a disease and it's a disease that thrives in the celebrity culture. While some people are able to overcome it, there are many more who aren't. Sadly, that scenario usually plays out like Houston's and Jackson's.

a little big.  Dunno how to fix that.

  • I haven't read the replies, but I thought flags at half mast were supposed to be for dead presidents, their wives,  officials, veterans, etc.--not for celebs.

I don't think it is right.
