Maternity bathing suit experience needed

I just signed Saoirse up for swimming lessons starting next week so now I have to find a maternity bathing suit. I never needed one with my first pregnancy so I'm a bit clueless. Do any of you have recommendations as to what kind to buy? Tankini? Full-coverage? I am looking for modesty here, not cuteness, since the lessons are on Sundays and there may be dads there, not just moms. I've already had a few moments with Saoirse deciding to pull on my shirt in front of men in public so that my huge pregnancy boobs are on display! Not fun. The only bathing suits I like so far are tankinis but I'm afraid they won't cover as much as my belly gets bigger. Any experience with this? Thanks!

  • I bought a swimsuit at 34 weeks with DD. Nowhere in our small town sold maternity swimsuits so I bought a larger size swimsuit at TJ Maxx. It worked perfect. I'm normally a size 6 and the 12 fit me great. I decided on a one piece with full coverage.

That's a good idea! I'm worried about how the belly will grow over the next 2 months though (I'm already huge). They have TJ Maxx here in London, though it's called TK Maxx for some reason. Maybe I'll give it a shot. Thanks!

I second buying a larger bathing suit. I hated the maternity bathing suits and I needed one that I could actually swim in so it just bought the largest bathing suit I could find. I never tried it on first either (I bought it on Amazon) it was the cheapest one I could find too. But  it was much cheaper than a maternity bathing suit.

I was thinking about that too after I posted it- how it would grow with you. I would probably buy another one in my 3rd trimester if I felt it wasn't growing wtih me right. Mine was $15 so you'd probably be spending $30 for two....not too bad.

  • I bought my maternity tankini top at target last summer. It was 19.99 and grew with me until even when I was a week overdue. I wore my regular bottoms the whole time but they sold skirt bottoms to go with it. Target has suits out now.

Hmmmm  Do they have target in London?

I love Target, but they don't have it here so that sucks. But I like the idea of just buying the top of a tankini and wearing a bottom I already have. Though I'm not sure it would work since all of my underwear is feeling a bit tight these days so I'm pretty sure my a$$ is growing along with my belly.

  • I bought a maternity tankini from Motherhood Maternity during my pregnancy.  It was great (and would be considered modest too, no plunging necklines or anything like that).  However, I was only 25 weeks or so when I needed to wear it.  I think if I was 35+ weeks it probably wouldn't have fit anymore, or at least my belly would have been sticking out the bottom.  Not sure how long you will need to wear it but that would be my only concern.

  • I second just buying a top and wearing bottoms you already have if that will work.  I ended up getting a maternity tankini top from a friend and then just wearing bottoms I already had until the last two months, when I bought a larger pair just to make sure I was well covered.

If you have a bikini that still fits around you could also just wear the bikini with a tank top over it if your pool will allow that.  I did that a few times at our local splash pad when I got tired of wearing the same suit day after day.

I tried on every suit in the store and all of the ones at Target last summer.  My parents' house is on a lake, so I used it a bunch.  The tankini was very long, and I wore it through the 3rd trimester.  I liked that it hugged my bump instead of flowing off the bump...that way it wouldn't fly up and expose my belly.  I'm 5'8" and was worried about it having enough coverage of the belly, but it was great.

  • I bought a maternity suit (a tankini) from Motherhood in my last trimester. I literally swam until the day before I gave birth and it fit great. The top had adjustable straps which was nice since I was swimming at the Y and was going for modesty. I tried on regular one piece suits in a bigger size, but my belly was just too big. Since you still have a ways to go, I bet that might work for you. Definitely try a TJ Maxx or equivilant, I don't know if they have a Ross or Marshall's over there, but hopefully you can find a good deal!
