DH going back to work and alarm clock ?

DH brought up a good point yesterday, something I hadn't thought about.  He is taking 2 weeks off work after the baby is born.  Baby will be sleeping in a PNP in our room in the beginning.  When DH goes back to work, he sets his alarm for 5:30, is the alarm going to wake up the baby every morning? That will really suck! I guess I could always move LO into her room but that seems too soon.  What are you guys doing? Any suggestions?

  • Baby will be in his room from day 1 because I can't go to sleep without the TV on and usually it is on all night so I don't want him to be awake because of the TV.

  • What about using a vibrating alarm clock that are usually used by people with hearing problems?

  • Yikes, this is a good question! I am currently trying to figure out how the heck I am going to keep a baby quiet all day when DH goes back to working nights after his month of leave!!

  • We had DD#1 in a PNP in our room for about a week and then moved her to her crib in the nursery. If I remember correctly, DD#2 slept in her room from the first night we brought her home (though she had previously spent 10 days in the NICU). We are in a new house now and the nursery is literally the room right next to ours so as far as I can see it, DS will be sleeping in his room from the get go. I kind of thought about having him in our room for the first week or so since it's so difficult for me to get out of bed after the c-section but I think I'm just going to make it work with him next door in the nursery.

Can your DH set the alarm on his phone and use a quieter tone? Either way, if he shuts it off quickly and doesn't let it drone on, I think baby will probably sleep through it.

  • While I am a firm believer in 'never wake a sleeping baby', DS was sleeping in our room when I went back to work at 8 weeks pp.  However, I believe that it is important that your baby get used to normal household noises.... alarm clocks, timers beeping when food is done, vacuum cleaners, etc...  They will spend a lot of time sleeping throughout the day, and you don't want to tiptoe around your house all day long, especially when your baby finds his/her rhythm with sleeping.
  • The baby will be it it's own room (right next to our room). DH's alarm is crazy loud with flashing lights so this is something we are going to deal with. I am thinking he will just have to have a little quieter alarm and I'll have to make him get up cuz i am a light sleeper.

  • This issue never even crossed my mind!  Luckily, my husband has about a month and a half before he has to go back to work, but when he does his alarm goes off at 4:30.  As it is, I get up with him now, see him off and then go back to bed, so maybe the baby will fit in the current schedule.  But I'd hate to have her wake up unnecessarily.  :-P  Good question!

  • I have slept through my husband's alarms for 4 1/2 years and I'm guessing baby will learn to too? I have no idea.

  • The alarm really never woke either of my kids up.  As a previous poster has mentioned, it is important that baby get used to noises and develop the ability to sleep through them.  Baby naps were the perfect time to get things done - like vacuuming, laundry and what not.  My kids (6 and 2) can still sleep through the vacuum running.
  • Well I ended up sleeping on the couch for 6 weeks because I wanted DH to get rest during the night since he had to work in the morning.  When I went back to sleeping in bed, I don't ever remember the alarm waking her up for the first 6 months that she was in our room.

  • DD slept in a PNP in our room for the first month and DH went back to work after taking off 1 week. DH worked an early shift so the alarm would go off at 5:00am and I don't recall it ever waking her up. Most often, I was already up feeding her so it wasn't a problem.
