Did anyone else have a vacuum assisted delivery?

H and I were talking about the delivery last night, and I asked him what the vacuum looked like, because I couldnt see anything.  I do remember the doctors mumbling that I was giving up, (which is insane, because I had only been really pushing for 20 minutes maybe.) and that her heart rate was dropping.I remember them telling me they were going to use the vacuum, and then they just did it, and she was born.

I found this video- I have never seen them use a dummy like that before, that is wild! Also the way H described it, sounds crazy.

  • They had to use the vacuum on A. I was listening to the heart rate monitor the whole time and I know it's normal for the heart rate to slow down during pushes and then go back up in between. I noticed that hers did not go back up (the docs noticed too but were trying to play it cool). One more push later and it still hadn't gone back up, so they ordered the vacuum. I don't remember it looking like the one in the video though. I knew I had to give it all I had or it'd be a c-section. We got her out on the next contraction and she had that awesome lump on her head for like a month.

  • I am told that they used one for a sec. to turn Jay during the c-seciton. SIL allowed students to be in her delivery room and they were hands on. They tried using he vaccume several times. Before the doctor finally stepped in and took over. Poor LO nephew had 5 puncture marks/scars on his head from that thing.
  • No vacuum assisted delievery here.  I'm so sorry you guys had to go through that, it sounds scary!  I'm glad the babies are okay.

Marsam, did you notice any markings on W's head?

  • I am not sure what they used with Jay, but it was nothing like that. Probably because it was in the OR and during a c-section.

Also, SIL's DS had scars from a needle/hook. She said that the vacume used had a little needle/hook that went into LO's head. I have never researched the vaccumes so I have no idea.

No, she had no markings what so ever. She does have that V birthmark, but a lot of babies have that, vacuum or not. The dr said it was from being squished in the birth canal, and will be gone in a few years.  You can really only see it when she gets mad anyways, she's like a Hulk baby.

Matt told me this after. Of course I heard nothing, but he said they were mumbling that I was giving up, and the heart rate was dropping.

  • We had to have the vaccuum as well but I dont know what it looked like.   DS had a ring around his head from it for a few days but it went right away.  He also had the mark on his forehead but they told me that was from hooking on some kind of an internal monitor, before I actually started pushing.

  • I had one. Still trying to block out the whole experience though. Traumatic.

  • Not here, but it's gotta be better than forceps.  Both my little bro and I were pulled out with forceps and we both still have dents in the sides of our heads from it (me just on one side, his on both).  It looks like a dimple by our temple.  Crazy!
