I currently have a 2 door Civic - not so suitable for an infant along with two dogs who travel a LOT with us. So we're looking into new cars and hoping to get one by time my maternity leave is up.
I've been lusting over the Yukon Denali XL or a Chevy Suburban. We're going to test drive some on Saturday and I can't wait. Although, my dream of a Ford F-350 has sadly been put on hold for the time being.
Anyone else getting a new car to accommodate their growing family?
Re: Anyone Getting a New Car?
I am! My husband totally surprised me by suggesting I buy a new car. I currently drive an 02 Nissan Altima and love it. It's getting higher in miles but still runs fantastic. I really think he made the suggestion so my bills would increase and baby shopping would decrease. I've bought a lot of stuff for LO!
I'm deciding between the Toyota Highlander or Ford Edge. I prefer the Highlander over the Edge but will let money guide my decision. Whoever gives me the better deal wins! I am getting impatient to just buy already. I've been comparing vehicles for about three weeks now and am ready to be done.
Haha, love it!
That's how I feel.. I'm not a patient person AT ALL and I just want a new car now. DH wants to hold off since we can get by with switching cars during my maternity leave (he drives a Jeep Wrangler) but I want my car now! I hate having to wait lol.Congrats! Those are good looking!
We just bought a new car a year ago. We bought a Kia Optima.. Its super nice and fully loaded. I love it! Well now DH wants us to get an SUV. He wants a Tahoe. I said umm no I dont want a gas guzzler. I get 35 mpg right now. I told him I will look at SUV's but not a tahoe. Plus I am spoiled I have Nav, touch screen, blue tooth, sync, and satellite radio and a bunch of other features. I said if i have to give up those I dont want a new car.
I've been referring to my car search as turning me into a soccer mom.
We bought a Prius a year ago, and love it so far. It will be plenty big for 1 child and a dog.
We only have 1 car now and are looking for a 2nd one. Unfortunately going from 50 mpg to the other cheaper options, makes everything look bad. My husband wants a hatchback so we might get a Honda Fit or Kia Soul.
We are, but mostly because DH's convertible isn't exactly baby-friendly!! Ha! I have a Toyota Corolla, which will fit the carseat just fine, but the convertible has to go... we're looking at a Ford Escape - something larger, but not quite as big as the Explorer.
Good luck with your car shopping! Have you watched "Up All Night"? They have an episode about buying a family car that is hilarious
I wanted a Tahoe- but could not stomach the crap has mileage.
After some test driving we ended up at with a 2011 Sienna. Mind you I swore I would never ever ever drive a mini van. But let me tell ya, that thin is the sh!t- I can get my great Dane and Aussie mix in the back with tons of room to spare still have 3 seats in the middle row (one of which comes out so that there is usually bucket seats) and every option you can think of.
Hmm, someone actually designed a car (I still have trouble calling it a minivan) ad actually put some thought into what is practical...what a concept
Oh, ya, AND I get 22mpg!
Suck it Tahoe
SO and I agreed that we would be buying a SUV with some of the tax money (down payment) this tax season. His car will be paid off next month and mine's been paid off for a year (even though I bought mine 2 months before he got his). However, since both of our cars still work great. He works a mile away and I only drive to the store and to school. We decided to hold off until next year to get the SUV. Since my car is basically the "extra car right now".
I have Chevy Cobalt, he has Mazda 6 (both are 4 doors) and with 2 kids that should be okay for now.
We would like a Buick Enclave or a GMC Acadia. We still have to go test driving though..... maybe I can convince him to do that before the baby arrives to see which one we like better.

BFP#2 DD arrived 5/7/12
We bought a 2012 Toyota Sienna this weekend.
I'm officially a minivan momma!
We looked at EVERY SUV and crossover out there, and found something wrong with each one. Too big, not enough storage with 3rd row, too difiicult to reach 3rd row, etc, etc. The Sienna is just so darn convenient, couldn't pass it up!
BFP 9/22/10, mc confirmed 10/31/10
4 month break from TTC
BFP #2 3/17/11, CP confirmed 3/22/10
BFP #3 9/7/11 Stick, baby, stick!
We are actually trading in our 2009 Chevy Malibu for a Suzuki XL-7 Luxury. It was a big decision becuase I LOVE my Malibu, however it doesn't leave a lot of room once a car seat is in the back. I have a 3 yo in my daycare that (until March) I have until 1130pm and take him when I go places and it's hard to fit other stuff around him--let alone our own child where we have to take luggage and 2 Mini. Schnauzers! The trunk is deep but has a very small opening!
I run a daycare so I wanted something with 3rd row seating-especially for the summer- When numbers are lower we may actually be able to go somewhere!!!! lol We were suppose to get it last Thursday but our uncle works for a dealership so he found the car, bought it from another dealership and they ran an inspection on it since it's all under warranty and decided they wanted to changed the catalic converter. Then the Suzuki dealership ordered the wrong part! awesome. So now it's a waiting game...I'm hoping for tomorrow though (but I won't hold my breath, lol)
Eek! Jealous, and I never thought I'd say that. I am obsessesed with the limited one, it is so stinkin' nice. I agree it is so much easier to access the third row than the SUV's etc. I really wanted a Sequoia, but now I want this.
We just got a Toyota Sienna. I freaking love it. I hate big SUVs (driving them and being on the road around them) and I found that at any rate, in general, the minivan fit our needs much better. We have two large dogs (golden retriever and yellow lab) and already they love the minivan, even without baby in it.
Note to those considering the smaller SUVs - they don't necessarily have more room. My aunt has a Highlander and we had a Vue and we could fit more in the trunk of my brother's Acura sedan than in the trunk area of those cars (and his backseat is actually more comfortable as well.) If you want a new car for the room, i'd take a tape measure with you to compare! (which sounds so dumb I know, but for us it helped to figure out what cars actually had the most room).
Please keep your LOs RF as long as possible
We traded my G35 (which I LOVED) for a new Nissan Quest (mini-van) last October. The car was fun to drive, but it was very cramped for trips and the backseat would be very very tight with 2 car seats. The front passenger seat had to be all the way forward for the rear facing car seat and we lived with that for almost 2 years!
I love, love, love our Quest. I was not sold on getting a mini-van, but it has been awesome. It's no car and I'm used to driving "fun" (fast) cars, but it has already made life easier with just 1 toddler.
I got a new car last year that I love, a hyundai veracruz. I think we've figured out a way to put two babies plus DD in the 2nd row and we're hoping to make it work. DH, on the other hand, had a 2 door VW. He traded it in for a minivan. He got the Grand Caravan RX (RT?). It's the "man van," black leather interior with red stitching, dvd, touch screen sound system, huge hard drive and other manly stuff. He loves it. I got him these for christmas, with a mom, dad, little girl and two boy storm trooper stickers and put them on the van.
