Baby Talk and Pacifiers

For or Against ? and Why?

For me I dont mind baby talk sometimes. I do a mixture of both normal talking and baby talk.I know other parents are against baby talk because they think it will limit their vocabulary or hinder them in the future. I personally think thats bs but i'd like to hear your opinions.

Now for pacifiers or "nuks" as I call them, I was against them from the beginning and wasnt going to give her one because I know that just adds to the list of something I have to wean her off of, but the lovely hospital decided they were going to give her one unbeknownst to me and now we own like 12 lol. But I guess the good thing is she only uses them for soothing and spits it out when she is done.

Re: Baby Talk and Pacifiers

  • First of all "baby talk" isn't going to hinder your child in any way. Speaking to your child will only help them pick up your language.

On pacifiers, I was against them all together too. Then my son decided he wanted to suck ALL the time, on me. I got tore up pretty bad so I caved and stuck a paci in. He does the same thing, soothes himself then spits it out.

  • we were waiting to intro a paci after a month, but Lena's also all about sucking to soothe.  I WISH she'd take one.  we've had minimal success with pacis when out in a stroller, but usually it's my boob or nothing.  I figure it's easier to wean her from the paci than from her fingers.

  • I don't use much baby talk.  I just talk to her in a soothing voice or my normal voice.

I didn't want to introduce a pacifier until 4-6 weeks of age, but that was before K had to go to the NICU.  She was under the bili lights for a week and could only be out from under the lights for 10-15 minutes at a time every 3 hours.  She needed something to help soothe her since she couldn't be held so I gave in and let the nurses give her one.  Thankfully she only uses it to help calm down and then spits it out.

  • We don't use baby talk, that is we don't use made up words like "baba" or "weewee".  We do use nonsense sounds though to soothe him.  He's going to use his own versions of words when he's learning how to talk anyway, so we think it's less confusing to use proper words with him until he starts mincing words by himself.

We've avoided a pacifier until he's a month old, but we will stick our upside down pinkies in his mouth if we're trying to soothe him to sleep.  He's definately a finger sucker though, so half the time it isn't necessary.

  • I try not to baby talk, but don't mind others doimg it to LO.  Once they are older though I hate it.

We don't use pacifiers at all.  I think they are fine up to about 3-6 months, but then LOs need to learn other soothing methods.

  • I haven't really done any baby talk. Not my thing...

We are using pacifiers. Sometimes she just needs to suck and my nipples can only handle so much.
