Should I be worried about size of my bump PIP

All I've heard throughout the whole pregnancy is  how "small" my bump is.  I normally brush it off with - "oh well it's my first, so I'm sure the next one will be different."

I had my final baby shower on Sunday at church and the ladies WOULD NOT let it go.  They kept asking if I was sure my due date was correct, how much did the doctor say the baby weighed, was I sure there was enough fluid, etc.

Suffice it to say I'm now officially concerned, but my next doctor appointment isn't until Thursday.  All he does is measure my belly and say "yep, you're measuring right on track." I haven't had an ultrasound since week 20.

Should I ask for another ultrasound? Or am I overreacting? By the way, I'm 38 weeks today according to the first ultrasound, first day of last period was May 17th and I'm fairly confident we conceived on June 3rd.

 Thanks for any feedback!

Re: Should I be worried about size of my bump PIP

  • Sorry the pic is soooo big! I kept trying to re-size it!

  • if youre concerned, ask. but my bump barely ever got much bigger than yours. i got those comments daily, and they drove me nuts. LO came out 6lb 6 oz at 36w4d so it was ALL baby. try to enjoy it, and hopefully LO comes soon :)

sry for typos, i've got a sleepy boy on the other arm lol

  • Like PP I would ask. But, everyone is different. I switched doctors like 4 weeks ago. When I went on our hospital tour the nurses commented on her being pregnant. I thought oh this just happened. Nope, she is due like a month after me and is tiny tiny tiny. I am huge! This is her fourth pregnancy and honestly had the nurses not said anything I would have not even noticed. Basically, everyone is different.

  • I wouldn't worry about it. Judging by the picture, you look just fine. Forget what other people say -- every body is different. If your doctor hasn't given you reason to worry, then don't.
  • People tell me this occassionally, but nobody's been really pushy about it. Actually, my OB asks every so often if others comment about how small I am. I don't think you need to be worried - everyone carries differently. Apparently, with my long torso and the way my ab muscles are, it's just a little harder for my ute to push out. But if you're that concerned, certainly ask your provider at your next appointment.

  • I wouldn't worry about it, but my mom only started showing once she'd hit 8mos pregnant, never showed more than you are now, and I was perfectly healthy. :)

  • I wouldn't worry. I am as small as you and I hear it ALL the time. I think it is because I am very tall and it is my first baby but I get comments daily.

  • every person's body develops differently. i wouldn't worry about it too much. do you feel your baby move regularly?

  • If your doctor isn't concerned, I don't think you should be either. My friend is really tiny (4'11" and 101 lbs), and she only gained 16 pounds with her pregnancy. People kept making her feel like there was something terribly wrong with her baby because she was so small, but her doctor wasn't at all concerned. Her baby boy was born perfectly healthy.

  • I wouldn't worry.  Measuring on track is a good sign.  And as long as your doc isn't pressuring you to get an induction, your baby will have time to grow as much as s/he needs to.

  • All women show differently. When your doctor measures you, they are measuring the distance from the pubic bone to the top of your uterus. This is what matters. If your doctor isn't concerned, then I wouldn't be either.

The size of your bump depends on the position of the baby and where all your internal organs ran off to as the baby got bigger. I personally think you look great!

  • No worries. I hear the same thing all the time. Someone asked me today if I'm 5 months pregnant and then I tell them I'm due next week. It's no biggie as long as your Dr. says the baby is growing accordingly then that's all that matters. <3;) Good luck on your little bundle of joy.

  • I get those comments all the time too (Nobody could even tell I was pregnant until I was about 7 months). It gets very old. I have been measuring right on track the whole time too.  I'm sure it was really a concern your doctor would have said something to you. I wouldn't worry about it.

  • You look perfectly normal and I'm sure that the baby is fine. I sometimes get the same reaction. I thought my belly would be bigger by now but I've only gained 16 pounds so far. Have your Dr check you again on Thurs and try not to worry about it.

  • I wouldnt worry if the doctor doesnt seem concerned. You might ask to ease your mind.

I am HUGE and everyone tells me so (thanks alot), but at week 36 I had to get an u/s because of two reasons, the doctor suggested LO was breech and I was measuring small. Turned out I was low on fluid, baby was weighing in right on track,  I drank lots of water and fluid increased. No harm done.

My point is how you look and how other think you look, too big or too small doesnt mean that baby is to big/small. If the doctor is concerned he/she will likely send you for an u/s to check. Let the doctors be the ones to decide if baby seems small or you are measuring small.

  • I never got much bigger than you.  I had my little girl at 37 weeks and she was 7 pounds 1 oz.  She's perfectly healthy and happy.  I wouldn't worry about it... I think everyone's body is different.  Some women really "pop" out and for others the belly just gets bigger all around.  I think it also depends on the size of your torso- how much room you do or do not have.

  • I wouldn't worry. When my SIL was ready to pop, no one could even tell she was pregnant at all, it was just the way the baby was positioned. Her baby was born at 5lbs and some change, 100% healthy. She's 11 now. :)
  • Thank you ladies! I just wish people would filter their comments more. As if I'm not freaking out enough already! ;)
  • Towards the end when I would tell people when I was due they would be surprised and say I was small. Then they would ask if we knew what we were having and I'd say two girls and they would be shocked that I was having twins. I didn't gain much weight (but I was overweight to begin with) and carried all that I did gain in my belly and due to their positioning I never got as big as I (or everyone else) expected. If your doctor thought their was any issue at all they would have done ultrasound ds or extra tests to check the baby's size. I would ask for peace of mind, but I'm sure your baby is perfect!

  • My favorite comment is "you're so small!!! Is there something wrong?" People just don't have a filter when it comes to pregnancy I suppose.

  • I wouldn't worry. This is me at 40 weeks with my first son, who was a healthy 7.5 pounds when born

People are jerks about pregnant women. I had so many people ask me "are you sure your baby is alright?" when I was pregnant with him.

  •    I'm pregnant with our second daughter and all I heard through BOTH pregnancies was how "small" I was.  Our first was 7lbs 12oz and 20 3/4 in long at birth. She was perfectly healthy and I was measuring right on track.

With our second, I am actually measuring "bigger" than 38 weeks. However, everything is still looking great! Both baby and I are healthy.

If you're really concerned about it, ask, but in my experience, everything is fine and normal. Everyone carries their babies differently. No pregnancy is exactly the same. Best of luck to you! :)
