American History Museum?

Has anyone taken a toddler to the American History Museum, and was there enough to keep them entertained? We haven't been there in a while, and I can't remember exactly what they have for kids. We've gone to Natural History and Air and Space a few times, but I'd like to branch out a little.

  • I haven't taken DD there, but her class did a field trip there (12 kids in the 2-3 year old range). It sounds like in the basement there is a section with lots of planes, trains, and cars that entertained them.

  • The American History Museum has two kids rooms on the main level.  One is dedicated to american innovation and has blocks, pinwheels, and other things to play with.  I don't remember what the other one is focused on, but it has a little kid/toddler area in it as well.

We've taken T there and she was mildly interested.  I would assume a boy who's already into that stuff would love it.

  • Absolutely!  We've taken our son several times.  The first time we took him he was just under 2 and loved it.  The exhibits are pretty kid friendly.

These are both closed now for a renovation project, but they are cool for little kids.

I think they have less that appeals to the toddler crowd in general than NMNH, but they do have a lot of vehicles and some Muppets.

  • Thanks for the tips! I'm bummed that it sounds like the kids areas are closed.
