Did your parents do anything on Valentines Day to make it special? Do you plan on starting or maintaining any traditions for your kids as they get older?
Valentines Day was my Dad's holiday. He was the self-proclaimed "King of Hearts" and he would have little stuffed animals and candies waiting for us outside our bedroom door the morning of Vday, with a card. As he got older, he got more obnoxious about it, especially once we all moved out. He sent us big boxes of random Valentines trinkets, and often decorate the outside of the box with photos of him dressed up in Valentines Day gear, even dressing up the dogs with him. It was something that he got a kick out of, and although it was kind of dorky, we looked forward to recieving our package each year. One year he sent the packages to our places of employment, which was a big hit with colleagues. LOL.
I'd like to do a little something each year to let my LO know that he's my Valentine, but I'm not sure if I will go over the top like my dad did. Maybe it's a thing that dads do for their daughters (it was 3 girls in my family).
I remember celebrating Vday at school (class party, exchanging valentines with classmates), but I don't remember doing much at home. I remember making my parents homemade valentines with hearts cut out of red construction paper.
I'm going to try to get some heart-shaped cookies for tonight and will probably let M eat part of one. He would definitely support starting that as a tradition.
I intended to make heart shaped pancakes this morning then serve them with sprinkles but a teething child caused em to miss 4 hours of sleep so getting up early was just not in the cards. We are having a little party at dinner with heart shaped noodles and a special dessert. I bought a little present for DD and really should get something for DS as well. DD is having a party at school so I know it will already be a very fun day for her.
My parents used to have candy, a small gift and a rose at our seat at the table when we came down in the morning. One year we got these small cracked glass bud vases and so they used those each year and put a rose and some baby's breath in it.
I do want to continue that tradition for H but not until she's older. I also think it would be cute to decorate her bedroom door overnight while she's sleeping.
Growing up it was just Valentine's cards with classmates and my mom probably decorated the house a bit. I don't remember anything big.
I made some heart shaped cookies for the girls' daycare last night and Maggie wrote out all the names for her Vday cards while Molly told me which ones she wanted to give to each person but other than that it is just a small holiday for us. I tend to go out all out at birthdays, Christmas, Halloween so the smaller holidays I go small.
My Dad would always get us a package of candy from the local "fancy" candy store.
Last night, littlechia wrote out valentines for everyone at daycare (I wrote the names, and she copied them below...) she picked out a valentine individually for each kid, and taped each one to a small package of candy. (Sorry, I know babypriess and babysaint aren't really at the point where they're eating M&M's...) I really wanted to make cookies, cupcakes, or some other sort of treat but ran out of time.
I always got a box of candy from my dad and cards from my mom and dad. My mom usually got me a little gift - a t-shirt, or bath stuff, or something pink.
I plan to give LO a card and maybe a special valentine's day treat like candy or cupcakes.
My mom loves all holidays, and so for all of the big ones (Vday, St Pattys, Halloween, etc) she would lay out gifts on the kitchen table for us - usually a card, something to wear (a seasonal t-shirt, earrings, headband, etc), and then some treats. She always made them really special, so I definitely want to do that for Guinevere also.
wow! I had no idea V-Day was such a big holiday for families and kids, I thought it was more of a "couple" thing...very interesting that so many of you celebrated as kids!

no, I grew up in a country that did not celebrate it.
V-Day was never a big deal to me

In the meantime, we'll just do a valentine card.

That means more M&ms for mommy :-)
