Can I get some advice??

Damien goes to his regular pedi and I have never had anything mentioned about eye doctors. Is this someting where the pediatrician has to reccommend first or should he already have an eye doctor? Sorry FTM and completely lost with this. Thanks in advance for your help ladies!

Re: Can I get some advice??

  • I hadn't even thought about an eye doctor yet.  I'm waiting to see the response from others.

  • glad Im not the only one. I actually seen a post about this the other day and started freaking out b/c I didnt know they should be seeing an eye doc . It was about their LO needing glases.
  • My pedi doesn't even recommend the dentist until they're 2.5, let alone getting their eyes checked. I asked at his 6 month because DH's open enrollment period was around then and I wanted to know if we should have added DS to vision or dental. I'm sure if your LO was displaying something unusual with their sight, you and your pedi would have noticed!

  • We are only going to an eye specialist next week since Brooke STILL has a clogged tear duct.  I hope to find out more info there (especially since my eyesight has been terrible since I was very young).

  • Nora saw a pedi opthamologist for a blocked tear duct, but otherwise, I don't think we'd have seen any kind of eye doctor.

  • LO went with my to my eye doctor appointment in July (yay for no sitter), and the Dr told me to bring him in between 6 and 9 months for his first exam. I did, and it was a pretty quick and easy exam, just making sure he was tracking, had periphial vision, and they were even able to do a quick check to make sure the Rx in both eyes was the same (not that he needs corrective lenses, but just that both eyes see equally well). Since they saw nothing to concern them they said he wouldn't need to go back until he was ready to start school; but that they like to do an infant exam to check for anything that might need early intervention.

It was covered under our medical insurance w/o a referral, but so is my annual eye exam, so. It doesn't hurt to ask your pediatrician about his/her recommendation or to check with your insurance company about coverage.

  • There is a free program called InfantSee which offers a free eye exam for infants up to 12 months old. A friend of mine works for them and recommends them. I need to make appointments for the twins soon. We all need our eyes checked anyway so I'm hoping to establish that doctor as our eye doctor as well.

  • After we had some problems with LO eyes we found out that are supposed to see an eye doctor in the first year.
