Hello everyone! I don't have a pic today because I haven't had a
chance to download them from my camera and I didn't think to take one
with my cell phone. I promise a pic on my next post with her eyes wide
open!

Breathing
So, Adalyn decided to start her day by pulling
out her breathing tube. So, since she extubated herself, her doctor
decided to try her on the CPAP machine and see how she did instead of
immediately re-intubating her. When we got there at 11am, she had been
on the nasal CPAP machine since about 8:30am. The MD, the nurse, and
the RT all told us that this was a trial, and to not be alarmed if they
had to re-intubate her. At around 11:30am, they checked her blood gases
to see how she was doing. Unfortunately, she wasn't taking deep enough
breaths and so she had high CO2. They had to re-intubate her and since
then she has been doing fine. She's on low ventilator settings, and so
she is almost ready for the nasal CPAP, but not quite yet.
Hopefully this means that she will be in a few more days. However,
what this does show us is that she is a feisty one! She did NOT want
that tube down her throat, so she just decided to pull it out. At our
last couple of Hands On Time with her, we kept having to move her hand
from being wrapped around the tube for fear of another extubation!

Feeding and Weight
She
tolerated the 8ml every 3 hours really well, and so they went up on her
feedings again to 11ml every 3 hours! Since it's a higher
amount, they use a pump to feed her the breastmilk instead of the oral
syringe and gravity. Since yesterday, she gained an
ounce (30g) and is now at 1 pound 11 ounces (770g).
Miscellaneous
Her
bilirubin remained down and so no UV light for her. Her head
ultrasound, the one that checks to see if there is a brain bleed (a
complication seen in premature babies), was normal. Yay! The MD said
that if they
don't see a bleed in the first 7 days that there is like a
99.something% chance that it won't happen. She said that they will do
another head ultrasound in 4 to 6 weeks to look at her white matter and
check for cerebral palsy, since preemies have a slightly higher risk of
this.
Today we saw her open her eyes a lot more than in
the past! And, to me, it's not just that she opens them, but that she
opens them up wider than before. We're getting into a sort of
rhythm/schedule and we're adjusting. Pumping is going really well for
me, and every day I'm pumping more and more. Today I actually pumped 26
ounces (780ml)!! We have already filled up one entire shelf in our
freezer and have started filling another shelf! They still have plenty
at the hospital freezer, but they will probably have us bring some more
breastmilk in the next few days.
Thank you everyone for all of
your support! We all really
appreciate it! I cannot begin to tell you how much it helps me to read
your responses and know that you are all pulling for our little girl.
It certainly makes this situation a little more manageable.
