? For those who have had an u/s (and T&P)

For those of you who have had and u/s already. How far along were you and was it an abdominal or vaginal one?

I am currently sitting at outpatients. Long story short I came in after talking with my Dr office. The dr in here used a portable ultrasound machine abdominally and said he had trouble finding a heartbeat. I am only 10 weeks and had gone to the bathroom about 1/2 before he did the scan. He ordered some blood work for god knows what because I haven't seen him since. I am currently waiting for a scan with the big machine and an u/s technician.....only an hour to go and I'm about ready to pee my pants!

So I'm just hoping that everything is okay and that it is hard to see this early or the doc just sucked at it!

Re: ? For those who have had an u/s (and T&P)

  • I'm 8 weeks tomorrow and I've already had 4 ultrasounds, with another scheduled for next week.  However, my situation is more than likely different than yours - I am high risk and have already been in the hospital, so they are just following me very closely.  My scans have been both abdominal and transvaginal.  They start with the abdomen and when they can't see anything because it's so early, they do a transvag one.

Good luck!  Hopefully you'll get to see your LO soon and everything will look great.  I believe 10 weeks is still relatively early to hear the HB with a doppler.

  • From what I know, sometimes it can be 12 weeks before a hb is picked up with an abdominal u/s.  FX everything is ok for you!

  • I've had 4 u/s so far and they've all been vaginal/internal. Even the one I had yesterday at 9w4d was done that way.  My OB said next time they should be able to do an abdominally. So it could be totally normal to not be able to see as well with an abdominal u/s right now.

    Good luck!  T & P for a great u/s.

  • I think 10 weeks is still early to hear the heartbeat externally.  I had an u/s with LO at 8w4d and it was internal.  At 12w it was external.  FX that everything is fine!
  • From what I know & have been told, hearing a h/b around 10 weeks abdominaly is pretty rare.  It's possible but I wouldn't freak out just yet.  I had my first u/s trans vaginally at 6w5d - I will have another u/s next week, not sure which way they're going with it.

  • i've had 3 and today will be my 4th because the first time they wanted to confirmand because i called with sever cramping. 2nd time i was told that my progesterone were low and the 3rd time was to check if the baby was doing ok/growing and heard the heartbeat.. Today is a check up, i finished my progesterone suppository on Saturday so the doctor want to check on me i guess plus the blood results and they have all have been vaginal so far.

    Good luck to you..

  • I've had two u/s so far, both were internal... one was at like 5 weeks and baby was so small it didn't even look like a blob.  2nd was 2 weeks later and baby was still tiny, but looked like a tiny blob and were able to see a flickering heart beat.  With each u/s they tell me that I'm not as far a long as we thought, so it's totally possible (esp if this is your first u/s) that your LMP dates were off and your dates may change.
  • I've had 2 so far and both were vaginal.  My first was at 6w3d and my 2nd was at 9w3d.  My next appt is on the 27th and they said I should be able to hear the heartbeat on the doppler then.  Maybe it was just too early to hear the hb on the doppler?  I hope the u/s goes well!

  • My dr used a portable u/s machine on me last week. It was really hard to find the h/b, he had to zoom in as many times as it would let him. It took quite a while to find it, mainly because the u/s machine wasn't very clear (and it was very old).

     Good luck...please keep us updated!

  • do you have a inverted or retroflexed uterus do you know?  I've read that that can make it even harder for abdominal u/s images and HB...

  • I had an abdominal u/s when i was 9 weeks, while i didn't hear the heartbeat, i did see it.
  • I had abdominal yesterday and I am 10 weeks today and she didn't have any issue finding a heartbeat, however she landed right on the image first try too lol.

I wouldn't worry, sometimes docs are not nearly as good as the u/s tech or like you said, the portable machine just might suck !

Try to relax and please keep us updated. FX for a heartbeat when they get back :)
