PT regression again.

I am at a loss about what to do with DS and his constant potty training regressions.  I can't figure out what sets them off...our lives are pretty consistent.  He'll go a couple of months, absolutely perfect...will go to the potty on his own at home, will tell us when we're out, no accidents at all, etc.  Then one day, he'll start to have accidents all the time (multiple times a day) for a few weeks, and then he'll go back to being good for a couple of months and this cycle repeats.

Did anyone else's LO go through this?  Is he just not absolutely ready yet?  We started PT him in july for school, so it's been a long time!

Re: PT regression again.

  • Yes.  Very frustrating.  As she gets older she understands incentives better.  For a little while we were doing a trip to the cupcake store for a dry week.  We also set up a conditional play date.  She was doing it on purpose because of the upcoming baby, though.

  • Potty regression is a very normal thing in most kids.  Both of my kids went through it - I just went back to a basic reward system as soon as it started and that always got us back on track within a few days.  I can tell that my older DD trained at 2 years 9 months and at 5 1/2 years, she still will have an occasional accident - not very often but it does happen - mostly because she just doesn't time it well and will have a minor accident on the way to the potty.  My younger DD will be 4 next month and trained about a year ago for daytime and about a month ago for night time.  She started potty training at 16 months but it was a huge back and forth thing for a long time and we just didn't push it and followed her lead and when she was ready, that was it.  She would have short regressions every few months for a day or 2 and then be fine.  They say that kids tend to really get it and stop having regressions by around kindergarten although some kids never regress and for some it lasts longer.
