Y'all recommend your SUVs!

We're looking at getting an SUV in the next month or so, and I can't decide on what I like. What do you drive, and what do you love/hate about it?

Re: Y'all recommend your SUVs!

  • I have a Chevy Tahoe and it is amazing. Plenty of room, very comfy, third row can be taken out for extra space, smooth ride, and so easy to drive!!! I have no complaints. Owned it for almost three years.  I don't think I could ever buy anything but a Tahoe or Yukon from here on. :)

  • Crossover here too. We bought the Nissan rogue about a year ago because it was the cheapest in its class with AWD (it snows a lot where we live), has great gas mileage, and because it was very safe. My parents bought one a few years ago, and it's been basically maintenance free. The worst part is the wicked blind spot when you're reversing.

I have a Yukon. It's big, but it's so nice having the extra space. We're also thinking about getting a new suv (in addition to the Yukon), something a bit smaller and better on gas for trips that don't require the space.

  • I have a Honda Pilot and love it.  Easy to drive and lots of room.  The 3rd row folds down when you are not using it. When using the 3rd row it doesn't have a ton of leg room but that is with adults back there. Kids would be perfectly fine.

My IL's liked mine so much they got one too.  Also I didn't buy brand new, I got a fully loaded used one that was a lease return.

  • I have a Chevy Traverse (crossover) and love it.  Seats 7 and has lots of features.  Since we found out we are having twins DH has been looking at Tahoes and Suburbans for himself.  I like the size of the Tahoe better but the Suburban has more storage room.

  • I love my Tahoe. It has 3 rows, plenty of room for baby and our dogs. It is very comfortable and rides smooth. I don't like that it is an 8 cylinder and doesn't get good has mileage, since I only drive 12 miles a day for work it isn't bad for me.

DH has a Dodge Journey, which is available with a 3rd row. I like the features it has and it gets great gas mileage.  It was also one of the most affordable vehicles out there With an available third row.

  • DH and I have decided on a Grand Cherokee. They're a little more expensive but are built very well and worth our money. It has taken us literally months to pick something out.

  • I have a Mazda CX-7 cross over.   They also make a CX-9 which is slightly bigger.  It's a very nice car that has a good amount of extras like a back up cam, bluetooth, ability to have sirius radio without having the to install anything extra, 6 CD player (not that anyone really uses CD's anymore), power seats, heated seats.  It's also very roomy!

  • Currently, I  have a 07 CR-V which I LOVE. Unfortunatly it really isn't big enough for more kids so we will be getting a new Pilot to haul them around in. If you are only having one or possibly two kids tops I would say get a CR-V, I wish mine were a little bigger. This will be our second baby and I can tell the back seat will have little room for more than the two car seats.

  • I have a Grand Cherokee right now, and it has plenty of room for 1 kid. I'm sort of dreading adding another carseat and losing the whole backseat. I was joking with my mom that when you have 2 kids, you need a car that seats 7 or 8! My lease is up July 2013 and I've already decided on the new Ford Explorer. I just love them.

  • Just bought a Mazda CX-7 back in June. (Crossover) LOOOOOOVE IT. It drives very smoothly and has a ton of room inside. I should be able to fit a pack-n-play, stoller, and then some. Love the safety features on it. I dont have 1 complaint about it!

  • We just traded in our Xterra for a Chevy Tahoe over the weekend. Its so much bigger inside. The space is so great for the kids. I love it!!

  • LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my Honda Pilot!  I bought it new about 6 years ago and other than new tires and new breaks (which was typical) has been worry and problem free.  It seats 8, the seats fold up and down easily and is really safe.  A few things that I will say: with the rear-facing carseat it was a tight squeeze for the front passenger (DH did not fit at 6'5", but I fit fine at 5'5"), also if you are on a budget, look into how much tires, breaks, etc. will cost.  Going from a Honda Civic, I nearly had a heart attack when I found out that one tire on a Pilot cost what 4 tires on a Civic cost!

  • I drive a Nissan Murano and absolutely love it!  It's very roomy without being too big, has plenty of leg room for everyone to sit comfortably, tons of storage in the back, and gets really good mileage.  Plus it's super fun to drive, and has AWD.

  • I love my Toyota 4Runner.  It is a 2006 with over 80,000 miles and I have never had to make a repair (knock on wood).  It has an optional third row seat.  If you have dogs, one thing I really love about the 4Runner is that the back window rolls down, which I think is pretty unique for SUVs.  I also get 21 miles per gallon highway (we opted for the non-4WD because we live in San Diego and didn't want the lower gas mileage).

  • I have a 2010 CR-V that I love.  I bought it new and fully-loaded so it has a ton of features.  It will nicely fit 2 kids, but 3 in carseats/boosters would be a stretch. It was a debate between that and the Pilot, but I drive a lot so I needed better gas mileage.  We're planning on just 2 kids, but if that changes we'll have to get something bigger.

  • I love my Rav 4 but we will also be purchasing the Honda Pilot with the TVs in the seats!
  • We have a Ford Escape Hybrid... and I love it. Nice and roomy (fits 3 pet carriers across the back seat, which was a necessity for us) and we have plenty of space. It's not getting the best gas mileage now in the winter time, but during spring and fall especially we really don't have to fill up that often. And I love the backup sensors. :)

  • Ditto the PPs about the Honda Pilot Yes

Plenty of room for car seats and gear.  And yes the 3rd row is a bit tight for full-sized adults, but the middle row can be scooted forward to provide more leg room (without taking away too much leg room from the middle).

Plus the gas mileage is decent for an SUV, and as long as you're up-to-date on regular maintenance you shouldn't have much to worry about regarding repairs down the road (other than tires, brakes, etc).

This is our second Pilot (we traded up for lower mileage) and so far we've loved them both!   We do plan on trading up to a Tahoe/Yukon when this baby reaches about 4 years old though since the kiddos will be getting bigger.  I'm 5'11 and DH is 6'2, so we're expecting giants LOL.

HTH and have fun when you go car shopping!!!

  • When DH's Camero died (such a shame) we got him a used Ford Explorer fully loaded (2006). He is absolutely in love with it and it is nice because we can tie the dog up in the cargo space and still have tons of room for other items.

I on the other hand have a Ford Fusion which is huge and has just as much trunk space as our SUV and as much leg room. Example: I have 6 real estate signs in my trunk along with a bunch of other items and my brother in law still got their pack n play into my truck. And their massive stroller fit in my backseat no problem.

    Just giving you options :)

  • I have a GMC Terrain. I LOVE it, you get a lot for the price, and it's super roomy inside. My DH who is 6'7" can fit in the back seat with the front seat the whole way back and his knees don't touch the front seat. Means lots of room for a car seat!

  • I also had a 2008 Jeep Patriot, which I LOVED (bought new). However, after 3 yrs and 60k miles the ENTIRE suspension went out and needed to be replaced. The tires on the Patriot are also a custom size, so there is no way to get tires at a reasonable price, you will spend at least $600 for all 4. Needless to say I traded in the Patriot to get a Honda, which has been great.

  • I have an 2008 Chrysler Aspen.  I love this SUV (besides the gas mileage.... 12-13 around town and 18 on highway).

It is very roomy inside and has a lot of bells and whistles.  The middle row is 2 captain seat and the back row is a bench seat.  We took a long trip last month with 5 adults and 1 child and we all fit comfortably plus baggage.

  • My Mazda Tribute is almost 10 years old with 140K miles and I still love it. Get about 22 MPG. Very roomy on the inside but small on the outside. It?s actually shorter than my Ford Mustang I had before it. We haven?t had any problems with it, but plan to get something newer this summer.
  • I have a ford edge and I LOVE it! Drives so smooth! I have driven a Ford Escape, Jeep Liberty, and Chevrolet Blazer and its beyond my favorite!
  • Thanks for your input, ladies! We did a few test drives yesterday and decided on the Tahoe. I'm SO excited, hopefully we'll buy next week!
