Has anyone done acupuncture to bring on labour?

Hey ladies!

I'm due on Saturday and have acupuncture booked for next Tuesday if labour doesn't start before then..to help get it started hopefully!

Have you ever done acupuncture to bring on labour?

Have you been doing it during your pregnancy? Or when did you do it (how many weeks).

What was your experience like? Any results?

Your input would be helpful! Thanks :)

  • Never done it... Seems a little strange to me.

  • No have never had it done. But my dr actually recommended it since my baby is currently breech and it may help the baby to change position. I have heard of massage potentially bringing on labor. There is apparently and area on the foot, inside the heel, that can start the whole process. I got a prenatal massage the other day and my therapist mentioned she has done it and put 1 out of 3 women she tried it with in labor. Pretty good odds! The thing is if your body is not ready, then labor could end up lastly MUCH longer than if you went on your own. My therapist said the woman it worked with had a 31 hour labor. Most babies do not come on their due date and 1st babies are usually late. I was 1 week late with my daughter.

    Good luck!

  • I have not, but it's one of the things I'm planning on trying. I'm scared of needles, though, so... I'm kind of nervous about it. I'm going to ask my LMP to do acupressure tomorrow, though!

Anecdata, of course, but one of my friends tried out acupuncture (once!) for induction this past November, and her water broke <12hrs later.

  • My MW said that of all the natural induction methods, this is one of the ones that works best.  That said, it will only work if your body is ready.

Considering all the strange things people do and eat to bring on labor, this one is actually makes a lot of sense.  I actually used acupuncture to help turn my baby from breech.  Not quite sure how it works, but I do believe it helped.

  • I was just wondering about this the other day, so I'm glad you posted because I'm curious about this myself!  I've been getting acupuncture since before I was pregnant, for various things, and have continued to go throughout my pregnancy.  I'm down to going once a month now, but I'd totally be interested in using it to induce if I'm over due.  My acupuncturist actually used acupuncture to induce herself!  I plan to talk to her some more about it at my next appointment.

  • I did and it totally worked.  I was scheduled for an induction the day after my due date because I had GD and I was nervous it would result in a c-section if my body wasn't ready.  So I went the morning before my due date around 11am and had accupuncture.  They used about 12 needles, mostly on my feet, ankles and toes but also a few by my knees and wrists.  It was very relaxing and painless.  8 hours later I had my first contraction and labored at home the rest of the night.  Went to the hospital the next day at 1pm and I was already 5 cm (had been less than 1cm before), DD was born 4 hours later with only 15 minutes of pushing.  It was such an awesome birth experience and I felt so calm and peaceful the whole time (which is not my typical personality) and I truly think it was because of the accupuncture, best $60 I ever spent.

    Good luck to you!

  • Wow!!! That's awesome, and what a great birth story BottomStar!

I feel like my body would be ready for labour as it is my 2nd baby and I will be past my due date when I do acupuncture...I'm excited to see what happens!!

I haven't been doing anything to bring on labour (other than sex, but thats normal). So we'll see :)

Thanks for all of your thoughts!

     :)

  • I did it once I was overdue with DD. I think I had three sessions of it the week after she was due. I am afraid of needles but it actually wasn't bad at all. I had an induction scheduled for 41 wks 3 days, and wanted to avoid it. I ended up going into labor the day before my induction. I would like to think the acupuncture worked.
