I think Abba ran into this...I think the issue is that you have to have FB or twitter. But I don't think it has to be linked up (until recently I was logging in through my email).

I clicked on the invitation link and it pulls up a page that says sign up with facebook or twitter? That's the only options. I have FB but don't want my pinterest account linked to it.

Crap and it says you'll be upgraded to facebook timeline if you do it, which I don't want! Ughhh. I wonder if there's some way around this.
