Working Moms

daycare/babysitting costs?

Hello! I'm new to this board!  I have a 16 month old DD, and am currently pregnant with DS.  My DH and I have been very fortunate that we have never had to leave DD with anyone other than family while we are at work.  My grandmother and my mom have been the main persons to care for her during that time.  With our new LO coming, we thought it may be best to hire a part time nanny/babysitter for DD, which will hopefully continue after DS makes his arrival. My mom and I interviewed 2 potential sitters today.  They were both very nice, but very different from each other; and both were asking very different pay.  I was just wondering if anyone had any insight as to what is a reasonable charge for a sitter/nanny.

 TIA! Smile

  • To me, nannies and babysitters are two different things.

Nannies make on average 50-60/day around me, if they are full time.

If you are just paying someone for an hour here, an hour there, I would pay at least 10/hour. (We overpay our night out babysitters, about 20/hour.)

    This exactly.

  • Totally dependent on location. Where I am nannies are $15-20/hr and sitters (usually less experienced younger) are more like $10-15/hr unless you're hiring for NYE or something similar.
