Baby acne

My poor little Julia looks like a freshman in high school! She has tiny little pimples/red spots all over her cheeks. I know it's common but is there anything I can do to help her out? I have been washing her face with Burt's Bees baby wash every day and patting it dry.  Anyone have experience or tips? She's still beautiful to her mommy! :-)

Re: Baby acne

  • Whoa, how is she a month old already?

I would stop using the baby wash daily. Even with adults, over clean skin will break out due to drying. The body will kick the oil glands into overdrive if it feels too clean, causing break outs. I have acne prone skin and was told to use a moisturizer even at night to keep the skin moist.

Give her a week with limited washing, maybe try some Cetaphil on her face.

  • Ya only use soap like twice a week. You can do just water for other days if you are trying to do a routine.

Ds has it bad too. The pedi mentioned at his appt it will go away in the next couple weeks. But Ellie had it until she was 2 months, so I won't be surprised if his sticks around that long too. It's a hormonal thing.

I agree with June! Both girls had it but T had it way worse than C. T even had it all over her head...on her scalp and everything. It is actually caused from the rush of hormones the baby recieves from the Mom during/after delivery. I promise it won't last long, but I remember it's horrible when they have it. A week....two weeks maybe. I know we asked our Ped about it and they told us not to put anything on it. I know with both girls I never wash their faces with anything but water for fear of it getting irritated or drying out.

  • sophia had it really bad. You can see it in my facebook photos. Hers went away when she was 2 months. I would wash her face with Dove every couple days.  My mom was convinced that it was something more b/c of how bad it was.  I didn't think she wuold ever get rid of it.
  • breastmilk!!!! It works really well! My girls never really had it that bad, but they definitely did. I just squirted a little breastmilk on my finger and just dabbed it on the acne parts whenever I thought of it. Usually at diaper changes/feeding times. I really think it helped!

  • Thanks for all the tips! I will certainly stop using soap every day (darn google steered me wrong), and I really like the breastmilk idea!
  • Dh is so phobic of breast milk. He would freak if he walked while I was putting bm all over Clayton. His is on his face, chest, and back. Plus he has some nice flakes from the cradle cap going on. Oh yeah, he's looking good.
  • Haha well I inadvertently tried the breast milk tip. She was nursing and pulled off and got soaked by the fire hose! We have her "newborn" pics tomorrow so I'm hoping for a miracle. Lol
  • They will just take the acne spots out of the pics, don't worry.  Even my own photos that I take, when I auto-correct them, the acne looks a lot better.
