Pregnant after IF

What is the normal protocol after BFP?

My nurse called earlier today with news that our last IVF worked (beta #1 of 195) and I go in for beta #2 on Wednesday.  What is the normal protocol after BFP?   How many betas?  WHen is u/s?   How long do you stay with RE?  I know each clinic is different and I will ask my nurse tomorrow, but I thought I would pick your brains.

Re: What is the normal protocol after BFP?

  • Let me start by saying Congrats on teh BFP!!!

I didn't do IVF but my clinic did 2 beta's at 17 DPO and 19 DPO.  They are also doing a 6.5 week ultrasound.  From there I believe I will be released to my OB.

  • For me, once they saw that my second beta had more than doubled, they didn't need any more. My first RE appointment would have been at 7 weeks (if they see you earlier than that, they might see just the sac and fetal pole, and probably not the heartbeat), but because of my SCH, I had a few before that. I was released to my OB at 8 weeks, but they would have kept me until 10 as policy if they thought anything might be amiss that they wanted to keep an eye on. My first OB appointment was not until week 12, a month later, so I kinda wish they hadn't released me so soon so I could see the baby again to make sure all was well.

    So happy for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow conGRATS!!! I got my positive on 12/9 and was dismissed just shy of a month later, the ultrasounds are the best though- when you hear the heartbeat you can breath a sigh of relief!

I had 2 betas done and then 2 u/s one week apart. I was release to the OB at almost 8 weeks. I never had any blood work done after the second beta and continued PIO/Vivelle Dots until 10 weeks.

Good luck with your next beta!

  • Congrats!

We only did two betas and they were high enough that we didn't need a third.  I think it just depends on how the numbers look.  We did our first u/s at 7w and every two weeks after that until we graduated from the RE at 12w.  Now I am with the OB and it looks like we will have a u/s once a month from now on.

  • Congrats! I had 3 betas since my 2nd one didn't rise as high as they wanted. When the 3rd one looked good, I was scheduled for an u/s at 6w, then at 8w and was released to my OB following my 3rd u/s at 10w. Although each u/s looked great, he wanted to be extra careful since I've had previous issues.

  • Congrats! I think my doc is a little more crazy. He took my HCG (which I'm assuming is beta) six, eight, 11, 13, and 15 days post transfer, with my BFP coming on the eighth. Since then, I have been for blood work 8 times and every other one does my HCG levels. I had an U/S at 4 weeks, 6 weeks, 8 weeks, and 10 weeks. I was released to the OB at 10 weeks, but they kept doing blood because I wasn't off my meds. I am now 12 weeks and (fingers crossed) had my last b/w today, but I wouldn't guarantee it!

  • Ahhhh - congratulations!!!!!! I am so, so excited and happy for you, MABride! This news made my day:) I did a 2nd beta 2 days later. I think if my betas were questionable they would have done more. I had the opportunity to go in for a first u/s at 5.5 weeks, but I waited until 6w2d because I wanted a good chance of seeing a hb, and lo and behold, we saw 2 hbs at 6w2d. I had another u/s at 7w3d and another one at something like 9w2d. Scans were approximately every 2 wks until the NT scan. I stayed with my RE until 13w2d, but only because in Israel it is the norm to stay with a RE through the 1st tri - it seems like most girls here graduate between 8-10 weeks. Congrats again!!!!!

  • My RE normally does 3 betas, and after the 3rd one does an u/s at 6 weeks.  They will then either release you or keep you for another u/s in 2 weeks if things look somewhat sketchy.  I only did 2 betas because of a vacation.
