How is the name Abigail so popular?

I don't have any friends who have named their daughters Abigail (Abby), and it doesn't seem to be popular on the baby name boards, so how has it been in the top 10 for the past ten years, according to the SSA?

Maybe some of you who are teachers can tell me if it's popular in your classes?

DH and I are worried that it's too popular, but I guess at least it seems to be sort of a classic popular name rather than a trendy one....

  • Personally I know two.  One girl is 19, the other is 26.

  • I do not personally know an Abigail but the name is adorable! Good choice- its not too common but also not unpopular.

  • the new SS name list will come out in May, so you have time to see if it's gone up or down in the last year at least

  • Because older names are back in. I would say it's less popular now, but a few years ago it was.
  • It's been one of our top girl choices.  Love it!  I'm not sure how it is that popular because I can't think of any Abigails.

  • It's my daughter's name and I know 3 others. 2 are in their early 20's, and the other is 4. I'm sure it depends on where you live.

  • I know a few Abigails. One is 8. The others are 5, 19, and 28!

  • I know one and she is 30. I agree with other pp, it really depends on where you live.

I feel the same way about Charlotte.  I don't know anyone who has named their kids Charlotte, and yet, it's extremely popular.  Hmm.  I'm waiting unti May to figure out what to do about that... well, that is, if we find out in April that I'm having a girl or not :)

That's funny. I know a ton of Charlottes  but no Abigails. I do think it is regional though.

You know, I think it might be a southern thing.  I live in the northeast, so... nope, no little Charlottes in my knowledge (not to mention, no Charlottes in any of my classes for the longest while either).

I wondered if it was a city thing. I'm in Chicago.

  • I teach...I have only taught 2 Abigails and they both happened to be the same year.  I have taught for 10 years, so that is good.

I do know about 5 Abigails from friends' daughters.  I don't think it is TOO popular.  I think it is a beautiful name and I LOVED it well, until I taught those two Abigails.  But that is my issue...go for it, I love the name and wish it didn't get ruined for me.

  • SIL is considering this if she has a girl in March.  I think it is a pretty name, I only know of 1 other Abigail.  I think this one would not be considered trendy, it is just popular the way Anna and Elizabeth are popular.

  • Thanks for your input, ladies.  I'm glad that a lot of people know adult Abigails, since I guess at least that means it's got staying power :)
