baby excema tips?

So my friend with the new baby--previously with possible dairy allergy--has gotten past his colic and dairy issues for the most part. He now is dealing with, among other things, excema. It seems to have started when he started at daycare (not sure if it's related) and he's got it on his legs and face/head. It seems pretty bad, because he's scratching himself a lot (to the point of bleeding in some places).

He's only 4 months old, so I'm not sure if there's much she can do in terms of treatments? I know she does a fragrance/dye-free detergent and gentle body wash. Any other tips? Is there a topical treatment she can use? The pedi wasn't all that helpful.

Re: baby excema tips?

  • C has mild eczema and we use this creme.  It works really well for him

  • Warner used to get little patched of eczema from time to time and Aveeno Baby's "Eczema Therapy Moisturing Lotion" always cleared it right up after a just a couple days. You can usually find it at Target.
  • DS used to get small patches of it on his face and we initially used aquaphor, but that didn't do much.  Our pedi recommended California Baby's callendula cream and it worked wonders.  After only a day or two of applying it the spots would get noticably better.  The stubborn ones sometimes took longer, or more applicatoins per day.

I liked that it was all-natural, smelled nice, and didn't feel greasy or sticky like some creams can.

  • The Aveeno stuff didn't work for T.  Someone here turned me on to Baby Eczema Cream (love the generic name?) from Gentle Naturals, and that worked the best for her.

  • she needs to take him to an allergist, the pedi won't do much. And ask about a prescription for Atopiclair.

We use California Baby shampoo, only 100% cotton clothes touching the body and 20-30mins baths every night, plus a humidifier overnight. No, the baths will not dry him out. As our DD's allergist put it, "if we all soaked our bodies every night for 20-30mins, we would all have fantastic skin."

  • Both DD and DS1 had eczema phases starting around four months.  Two readily available things that helped both of them were Aveeno oatmeal bath packets and VaniCream.  Also, we use prescription body wash that is basically Cetaphil, I think. Prescription hydrocortisone cream cleared things up right away, but you can't use it continuously.  However, DS1's was worse than DD's and he technically had open wounds (sounds worse than it was).  We needed them to heal to prevent infection or scarring, so we used that every time a new spot flared up.  Aquaphor did nothing, and neither did a prescription shampoo (with the active ingredient of Selsun) because DS1 had a raging case on his head.  He still has dry skin but luckily both outgrew the eczema before turning a year old...hopefully your friend's son will do the same.

  • Thank you for posting this.  Your friend's LO sounds like my LO.  He had some eczema early on, but it started getting bad when we started daycare.  It is mostly on his forehead and his forearms, although there are some patches on the back of his head and legs.

Our pedi suggested Triple Paste Eczema cream for daily use and gave us a prescription for 2.5% hydrocortisone for the bad flareups.  She also suggested an Aquaphor wash/shampoo.  They're working better than the Aveeno Eczema Therapy and bath wash we were using, but we have to constantly apply it.

But I'm glad to see some of the other posts.  I'm going to try the California Baby stuff and see about that Atopiclair because I'm afraid of scarring.
