Trying to Get Pregnant

My husband told me last night that he wants to start trying :-)

My husband are middle school sweethearts and we married a year and a half ago. We have always talked about children... He told me last night that we should just see what happens. Meaning, stop the pill and enjoy "trying to conceive." I am sooo excited. He is 27 with a good job, and I am 25 and am in grad school. We said that if I get pregnant soon, I can finish my MSW Degree part time/online. We Are excited to start right now but I can't help feeling irresponsible because I have 2 semesters left. I read and hear that there is never a "right time to have kids.." Any opinions ??

Re: My husband told me last night that he wants to start trying :-)

  • Ulitmately, you are the one that has to be comfortable and happy with your choice.  On one hand, there will never be a perfect time.  On the other, many people decide to wait until certain (big) goals have been met to really try.  If you're okay with finishing your degree part-time and/or online, then go for it!  If you're not sure, consider holding off until this fall... That way you could be TTC but would have graduated by the time the baby arrives.

    Welcome, and good luck!

  • If you only have 2 semesters left, then you will have graduated by the time a baby would be born.  If you do not feel ready, then I would hold off until you have finished school before actively trying.

I took it as two MORE semesters (after this one)... Hmm....???

I still had 6 months left of grad school when we started to TTC; I was more concerned with being done by the time the baby was due, not to much being done before TTC.  In retrospect, the last 4 months of school was very stressful so a part of me is glad I didn't get KU then, but you'll do what you have to do.  I think many times we think we couldn't have done something, but obviously if I had gotten KU while still in school, I would have dealt with it.

I am glad we started when we did though because this is taking longer than I expected.  We started TTC in May, I finished school in October and had a BFP/mc in December.....two cycles post mc and we're still trying.  I say go for it but only you can really know how you would handle possibly being KU/not feeling well and being in school.  GL!

  • I agree that each case is completley different.  One of my best friends is pregnant and is finishing Grad school in May.  They had been trying for 5 months before conceiving and finishing Grad school was the last thing on her mind because she knew she had a supportive family and that she was capable of doing it.  Each person's story is different, listen to your heart!
  • Congrats on the big decision and welcome to the board!

I was pregnant with my son during my master's degree, but had graduated by the time he was born.  Now, I'll have just finished my first year of law school when we start TTC.  I know several other law students that had babies while in school.  If both parents are ready and able to handle it, it can be done.

I think this statement is partially true.  If DH and I waited for the "perfect" time to have kids, we would have never had them.

Congrats on taking this step with your H.  Welcome!

    That is so true.

This. School and a baby are definitely do-able. I had my first between my second and third years of law school. While it's tougher to have a baby and get all my studying done, it's not impossible and has been totally worth it. So if you feel ready then you should definitely go for it.  And welcome!!

  • I always "planned" out my life, and while I have accomplished many things...I haven't exactly accomplished the ultimate goal-to be a mom (yet)!

So, to answer your question, when you feel ready to start a family I say go for it! I no longer believe my plans will work out JUST how I want them too...Hence, why life is so interesting ;)

    GL!

  • I was finishing my Masters in Elementary Ed. when I got pregnant with DD. I ended up having to drop some courses due to pregnancy brain and re-took them after she was born. I just couldn't focus on my school work!!! All I wanted to do was look up baby things. LOL!   Good luck to you and your hubby!
