Trying to Get Pregnant

Had my doctor's appointment today...

Well, I had my annual appointment today. But, I also spoke to her about my ridiculously long cycle.

She thinks that I have PCOS. She took blood work to see what my levels are. She went ahead and prescribed me Metformin and Provera. I'm not supposed to start the Provera until my blood work comes back with a negative pregnancy test.

I'm pretty upset. I called DH (crying, of course) and he did the best he could to be supportive. But, he just kept saying it'll be ok and all that. I love him, but I think it's hard for men to understand how much less of a woman I feel like right now.

I know that this doesn't mean I'll never have a baby...but it's not going to be easy.

Thanks for listening. Any advice or suggestions from anyone would be great :) So glad I have you ladies to vent to.

Re: Had my doctor's appointment today...

  • Ridiculously long cycle?  As in this is the only long cycle you've had?

I know someone will chime in the correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think PCOS can be/should be DX'd by bloodwork alone.

This is my first cycle post bcp. She didn't say for sure that I had pcos..she was just saying how she suspected it. Based on my history and all that. image

  • How did she diagnose you with PCOS if she just ordered bloodwork? One long cycle is hardly PCOS definite.

To diagnose PCOS, you have to do CD3 bloodwork (on CD3) and also have a follicular ultrasound.

S why not try the provera and see what happens and skip the met for now?  One long cycle right off of BC is nothing to start throwing DXs around for.

  • Hope it's no too personal, but why does she think you have PCOS?  Was the long cycle her only reasoning?  Do you think she was just thinking it was a possibility and wanted to test for it right away?  What a bummer.  Having been in the same boat as you, at the same time, I know how excited you were to finally have that appointment and get some answers/hope and I am sure that wasn't what you were expecting.  Fingers crossed she was wrong, and if not it seems there are lots of girls on this board with PCOS that will be great resources/sounding boards for you as navigate through it to your BFP :-)

  • I"m sorry  you might be facing PCOS. It's a giant pain in the a$$, but the good news is that there is so much hope to have a baby! (see cutie in my siggy!)

Couple of things...do you have any other symptoms of PCOS? PCOS can be diagnosed with blood work. That's how I got a confirmed diagnosis.

Also, when you take the metformin, what dose are you taking? I ask because if you don't work up to your RX'd dose...it can cause some undesireable side effects. Start with one pill a day for a week and then work up to taking 1 pill 1/2 day, etc. (I take 1000mg/day and take 500 in the am and 500mg in the PM)

HTH...if you have any other questions let me know!

  • Well, I am overweight (about 50 lbs or so). I've always had a weigh problem. I do have dark hairs on my belly (nothing that makes a love track or anything...but they are there). I gain weight super fast. I've never had regular cycles, even before the bcp. I do have Hypothyroidism as well. I'm working on the weight now and have already lost a few pounds.

And she is titrating me on it. I start with one pill/day this week. 2 pills/day next week and then 3 pills/day the next.

I think I'm going to wait for the bloodwork to come back to start taking the Metformin.

I would wait until you have CD3 bloodwork.. if the doctor tries to compare your FSH to LH ratio on a day other than CD3, they will not be accurate.

Thyroid issues alone can cause cycle issues, OBGYN's are quick to jump to a PCOS dx because they don't know better.
