Extended bfing and AF

So I just got my first period about 6 weeks ago and haven't had one since. I know I should poas, but I've been traveling so haven't had a chance.

But I was wondering if it's normal to be irregular. I am still nursing and she is going through nursing spurts because of teething. She normally nurses at least 4 times a day, but with teething it is more. Would this affect AF?

Also, I'm on the mini pill.

  • I got AF way earlier than you, while DS was still nursing about 10x a day, round the clock, so I'm a little jealous. ;) However, my periods are still really irregular, coming anywhere from 20 to 45 days apart. So you're most likely fine. As far as I can tell, once you get your period back the amount of nursing your LO does doesn't affect when you get it again, but it takes your body a bit to get into the swing of things again.

  • I am jealous.  AF showed up around 4 months after DS was born.  It was super heavy until the past 3 months it is starting to shorten and lighten.  DS still nurses like crazy.  They were irregular for the longest time; showing up anywhere from 31-43 days apart.  They are just now starting to show up more regular.

  • Yep, totally normal to be irregular with nursing.

  • My AF showed when DD was 7mos.  My first few cycles were long and annovulatory.  Then my LP was only 7 days for a couple of cycles.  Then 9 days for a couple of cycles.  Turns out 9 days is long enough for me to get PG.  To actually answer your question though, irregular is normal but I'd probably still POAS just to know for sure.

Currently going through our second deployment. Can't wait for Zoe to meet her daddy!

  • Anything can happen. I got AF back at 15 months pp and it was sort of wonky until I weaned completely at 25 months. I noticed my cycles were particularly irregular when DD was suddenly nursing more due to teething or illness.

Nonetheless, I must have POAS at least 5 or 6 times in those months.

  • I'm jealous because I still haven't gotten AF & DD is almost 20m. I want it! I want to get pregnant :-) I'm having a hard time weaning though.

  • Thanks for all the responses! Good to know it's normal.

Anna - I bet I'm going to be p(ing)oas a lot too.  It's so nerve-wracking! I was always very regular before getting preggo.

(I was very happy to have it gone for so long, but then again I'm not trying to get preggers.)

  • POAS! I got my first period when DD was 17 months and got pregnant the next month. I think I ovulated late based on the timing of things, but I did get pregnant (and then miscarried). I've gotten my period every month since -- it was only slightly irregular (like 35 days rather than my pp 28) and the last few months has been very regular again. DD is nursing about 3 times a day, more on weekends.
