**Sinafey**

I wanted to copy August8080 and ask what products you use on yourself. I've started using the Say Yes to Blueberries, but none of the rest of our hair or body care is very natural. Any recommendations?

Re: **Sinafey**

  • I actually use a lot of homemade stuff on myself,

Hair: I do "no 'poo" which is a baking soda wash followed by an apple cider vinegar rinse.  I absolutely love it (and the cheapness helps to offset expenses in other places) but you can't use most styling products (anything with an ingredient ending in "cone") while doing it, so it's not for everybody.

Flaxseed gel is a good styling option for no 'pooers, and I rub a few drops of argan oil between my hands and then through my hair to cut down on frizz.

If you prefer "real" shampoo and conditioner I've heard good reviews for Aubrey Organics GPB products and they're rated ~2 on the Skin Deep database.

Body:  I usually use SoAP (South Austin People) bars that I buy at the farmer's markets.  Note that some of their bars use only pure essential oils and others use fragrance oils.  Fragrance oils can contain anything, so I avoid them.  Their lavender is awesome.

I use a mixture of jojoba and sweet almond oils for moisturizer (put it on while your skin's still wet but be careful because the tub will be slippery) and use pure shea butter for really dry spots.

Face: I've dabbled in the Oil Cleansing Method (using just olive and castor oils) and love it, but since it takes longer I don't do it consistently.  Most days I use Philosophy's Purity Made Simple cleanser (rated a 3) but I'm on the hunt for something with a better rating.

I love Aubrey Organics masks, especially the Sea Buckthorn and Cucumber moisturizing one.  Alba's un-petroleum gel stuff is supposed to be great for around the eyes but I haven't tried it.

    Hope that helps!

  • Thanks! The no-poo is very interesting. Do you have straight or curly hair? And can you not use other styling products just when you use that or for the whole cycle of the hair? I don't use much, but I'll generally use something to smooth when I flat iron and a gel to maintain wave if I let it air dry wavey. I have some dandruff though, so I also use shampoos some for that.

And now that you mention it, I've used alba face wash. I had stopped while pregnant because of the salicylic acid, but I guess I can take it back out again.

My hair's naturally wavy, and it's become much more so since I ditched shampoo.

You only need to avoid styling products while you're no 'poo'ing.  I actually styled my hair with some of my old stuff for a hot date last week, then used regular shampoo to strip all the products out before resuming my normal routine.  Some people have an awkward transition period when they first start but I never had an issue.

Also, my hair does not smell like vinegar, which was a concern for me in the beginning!  If I'm in the mood for a scent I'll add a couple drops of an essential oil into the argan oil that I put in it.

  • Thanks! Last question- do you keep your ACV in the shower? I keep mine in the fridge, I thought it needed to be refridgerated. Or maybe only if you ingest it?
  • I use the Bragg brand and it says that it doesn't have to be refrigerated, just kept out of direct sunlight.  I keep the ACV in my shower and the BS in a jar with a scoop outside.

Make sure you take the BS out of it's box because the humidity made mine start oozing out of the sides.  It looked like a creepy science experiment!

You are a wealth of information! Thanks so much for all this. I would love to try the no-poo, but I'm scared about the transition. Maybe over a long weekend would be the best time to start. But I'm keeping this saved until then!
