Monday, Monday (NBR vent)

After a nice Sunday, I woke up this morning feeling tired and grumpy...and it was not helped by the fact that I had to remind the woman who is renting our basement that she still owed us her rent for February.  DH actually gave her a ride to the bank on Saturday to get the rent.  Apparently at the time, since he was driving, he said that she should hold onto it and give it to us/him when they got home.  So now it's TWO DAYS LATER and I have to ask her for it? Argh.  Not to mention that clearly it's late...this is the second month in a row that we have had to wait until the middle of the month. Last month there were extenuating circumstances, which she told us about ahead of time.  We're reasonable people and I was fine with it. This month, no explanation for the delay.  I told her this morning that she needs to get back on a regular schedule (i.e. the first of the month), which she seemed fine with, but it still irritates me that she never acknowledged the late payment this time.

So, end of story, right? Nope.

Just counted the money (she pays in cash) before heading to the bank.  It's a $100 short.

Sigh.

Oversight? Probably. But after all the rest of it, it just makes me super annoyed.

  • What? Do you have a clause in your renter's contract about penalties for late payment? We had one about payment after the 10th of the month.

  • Ugh, that is annoying. It's unfortunate, but it's possible she's taking advantage of your kindness the previous month. I would start imposing late fee penalties if you have such things in your contract. When we were renting our last place, I accidentally wrote the rent check for a thousand dollars less - complete brain fart on my end - and didn't notice it until I saw the amount on my bank statement. I called the property management company immediately to tell them I was driving over to drop off the balance and explained my mistake but they told me I still had to pay the $200 late fee (!), even though we had never ever been late on rent and were picture perfect tenants. I was pretty peeved but since it was in the contract, there was nothing I could do about it.
