Help! - PTing, STTN, and Toddler bed all in one post ;-)

Hi Ladies - I know I've been awful about posting but I have been lurking and I know you all have lots of mommy wisdom and I need help.

Here's the issue - My wonderful sleeper of a child (used to be 7:30pm-7:15am) does.not.sleep anymore.  She might fall asleep okay (around 8:30pm) but then wakes up constantly throughout the night.  I've let her cry, I've laid with her - nothing gets her to STTN.  Some nights she is only getting 4-5 hours of sleep.  She naps fine at daycare (usually 1.5 hours)

Here's the other issues - she's PTing, and doing a really good job at it.  I've noticed that sometimes when she wakes at night she is yelling "potty."  As soon as I ask if she needs to go potty, she stops crying (she wears a diaper at night).  I of course take her to the bathroom and she always goes.  So is she waking up each time she has to pee?  And if so, does that eventually go away?

And the last issue - because she was refusing to sleep I thought maybe it was tied to her no longer wanting to be confined in a crib.  The last two nights I've laid her crib mattress on the floor.  She's gone to bed easy, but then each time she rolls off the mattress she wakes up.  I'll let her cry for a bit to see if she will put herself back to bed but she won't.

So what do I do? I'm not getting any sleep and I know DD needs more sleep than she is getting.  Any words of wisdom?

TIA!

  • With the crib - can you get her in a 'big girl bed'?  Even a bedrail on her mattress on the floor?

The potty training - it takes kids a long time to be night-trained, so that's a tough one.  Most people I think limit how much their kids drink before bed, to avoid that.  My almost-5-year-old wakes up to go to the bathroom if she's had too much to drink before bed, so we tried to avoid that.

How long has the sleeping issue been for?  If it is a short-term thing, perhaps it is just a developmental change (growth spurt, teething, etc).  When were you planning on getting her into a big bed?

Even a bedrail on her mattress on the floor? Maybe.  Perhaps I can find one to borrow to see if it helps before I invest in one.

Yes, she is limited in her fluid intake after dinner.  And she pees a ton before actually going to bed.

How long has the sleeping issue been for? About three weeks now.

If it is a short-term thing, perhaps it is just a developmental change (growth spurt, teething, etc). She is definitely going through a growth spurt.  I can't feel her two year molars yet but I realize they might be sore even if they aren't above the surface.

When were you planning on getting her into a big bed? I want to just convert her crib to a toddler bed if that is what she needs (or is ready for) but wanted to just put the mattress on the floor for a bit to see just how often she was going to roll of the edge.

  • PTing is hard to figure out. There are times when he'll be up 3 times in a night to pee when he's hardly had anything to drink. Other times, he'll sleep through the night when he's had a ton to drink all day. Is she letting out a lot when she pees or does it only seem to be a trickle? She may not yet have the understanding of what it means to completely empty her bladder, and that's why she goes more at night.

Our crib didn't have a rail when we converted it to the toddler bed, so we got a piece of really thick foam (I think about 4-5" thick) about the same size as the crib mattress that we put on the floor right next to his bed. He didn't fall out to often, but the foam cushioned his fall so that he typically stayed asleep. It worked until we converted it to a full bed and put up a bedrail.

Then again, if she is going through a growth spurt, that could be derailing everything and you may have to take a wait-and-see approach once it seems to pass.
