stay in sleepsack or do something different?

We are renting a house right now and it is COLD in here!  DS2 (9mos) seems warm enough in a fleece sleeper with a fleece sleep sack.  But just this week he has started rolling in the crib at night (he's always been a back sleeper).  I feel like the sleepsack is making it hard for him to move around once he's on his belly but I realize that could just be me making that up.  :) He hasn't learned to crawl yet or how to go from belly to sitting (I think he's trying to do one or both of these in the crib and gets frustrated). So, do I keep him in the sleepsack and know that if he *really* wants to move he can or do I try something different?  Any suggestions? He constantly takes off socks so I'm afraid to put him in something without feet.

  • We kept DD in a sleep sack until she could stand up, but we never got the sense the sleep sack was hampering her ability to move around. If you think that's the case, you could put a pair of socks on underneath footie pajamas - that's what we did for DD when she stopped using the sleep sack.

  • I'd keep in him in sleepsacks if he's sleeping well. We're still in sleepsacks at 17.5 months (we haven't even moved up to the type with feet--we're still in the regular type). They love them and can move around in them just fine. They're like little Maggie Simpsons walking around their crib in them.
  • J has been in a sleepsack since he transitioned from swaddling. I don't think it's affected if/how he moves around the crib at all--he moves a LOT.

Is it upsetting your LO to not be able to move around? If so, you could try something else (fleece footie pajamas?) but otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it.

  • DS has been known to walk around the living room in his SleepSack (regular SleepSack, not one with foot openings), so I don't think it's ever prevented him from moving around pretty much however he wants.  He just can't climb in it, which I consider to be a good thing :) I agree with pps that I'd leave your son in the SleepSack if he's sleeping well in it.

  • My 18 month old still uses a sleep sack at night and he loves it. I'd stick with it if it's working for you.

  • My 13 month old has been in a sleep sack since he was about 4 months old and he moves around just fine in it.  Your LO will figure out how to move around in it!

  • OK, thanks ladies.  We'll just stick with it.  He is still sleeping well but in the mornings he's SCREAMING instead of gently waking up like he used to.  I think he's getting frustrated that he can't sit himself up and it sounds like the sleepsack isn't keeping him from being able to do that--he just hasn't figured it out yet. Thanks again!!

  • DD learned how to sit up and stand in her crib in her sleep sack around 10 months, so just recently. She moves around fine in it now. She had a bit of a learning curve but figured it out on her own. I like the sleep sack because I feel like it keeps her nice and cozy.
