DS is Obsessed with Knives. Good or Bad Solution?

I'm sure it's because we don't let him have them but he is always reaching for knives and saying he wants to cut.  When I was making sandwiches, he watched me slice the cheese. I gave him a hunk and a toy knife. The plastic wasn't cutting it (no pun intended) so he wanted Mommy's knife.

Melissa & Doug has two wooden cutting sets. The knife is - obviously - dull and the wooden foods are held together with Velcro so it actually seems like he is cutting the food.

Would this be a good diversion or should I be downplaying the cutting fascination until it passes?

ETA: He's 22 mo.

  • My neice (just turned 4) and nephew (just turned 2) have had this set (or one similar) for a while...I think my neice got it for her 3rd birthday? Anyway, they LOVE it.  And my nephew has a total knife fascination like your son.  My nephew will say "mommy, cut?" when my sister is cutting something and all she has to do is tell him to go get his knife and cut his food up and he goes right to the toy and starts "cutting".  It's too cute!  Sometimes she puts him up on a stepstool at the counter next to her and lets him "cut" his toys while she does dinner prep.  He is very happy with that diversion!

  • We have the M&D cutting food and cutting pizza set. Ds loves them. I had them in my pile of stuff to consign and he dragged them back out tonight (he just turned 4). The Gerber utensil sets also come with a knife he could use for cutting soft fruits.

  • When my DS was younger I always let him use one of those pumpkin carving "knives" that come in stencil sets at Halloween.  They're not sharp, but they actually do a good job of cutting things.  He loved to help me in the kitchen with them.
  • I let my DD use a cheese/hor d'ourve(SP) non sharp spreader to cut banana's canned pairs, and other soft fruits,  She also uses it to spread peanut butter on bread.  I would say find safe ways to teach him about how to cut rather then try to avoid the knife fasination all together.
