Exposed to Cat Feces and Freaking Out!

Today my dog was outside enjoying the lovely weather and when she came in she was covered in what I thought was mud. I was not happy considering she just got groomed two days ago. So we throw her in the tub and I start washing her up. The smell was hideous, something like dead rotting fish. This is when I realized it probably wasn't just mud. Not even 10 minutes after she is dry my nose starts clogging up and running all at the same time. Then I start sneezing and now my eyes are dry and itchy. I have come to the conclusion that she either rolled in a dead cat or rolled in cat feces. Since I know I'm allergic to cats and pretty much nothing else, I would normally just take some benadryl and think nothing more of it. Well since I'm pg I'm freaking out because I don't know if I was exposed to that disease that cats and their feces can carry.

What should I do?!!

  • That really sucks, but everything will probably be fine.  I have a cat and when my husband is out of town I've had to change the litter box during both of my pregnancies.  It's been completely fine and nothing happened.  You can talk to your doctor at your next appointment.

  • It's unlikely you'll have a problem, but since you don't know who the cat was, I'd let your OB know. They can test to see if you've been exposed to toxoplasmosis.

This. Most women with indoor cats don't have to worry but because it was outdoors and you have no idea whose cat or what cat it was I could be proactive about it. At least call and get their opinion.
